न शंभोर्लज्जया वक्त्रं प्रत्यक्षं च विलोकितम् ॥ न च सा लज्जयाविष्टा करोति प्रगटं मुखम् ॥ २१ ॥

sanskrit

Since she was bashful in the presence of Śiva I could not see her face. She did not show out her face on account of shyness.

english translation

na zaMbhorlajjayA vaktraM pratyakSaM ca vilokitam ॥ na ca sA lajjayAviSTA karoti pragaTaM mukham ॥ 21 ॥

ततस्तद्दर्शनार्थाय सदुपायं विचारयन् ॥ धूम्रघोरेण कामार्तोऽकार्षं तच्च ततः परम् ॥ २२ ॥

Then I began to consider proper means whereby I could see the face. Afflicted much by the cupid, I pitched upon the production of airful smoke as the means thereof.

आर्द्रेंधनानि भूरीणि क्षिप्त्वा तत्र विभावसौ ॥ स्वल्पाज्याहुतिविन्यासादार्द्रद्रव्योद्भवस्तथा ॥ २३ ॥

I put many wet twigs into the fire. Only very little ghee did I pour into the fire. Much smoke arose out of the fire from the wet twigs.

english translation

ArdreMdhanAni bhUrINi kSiptvA tatra vibhAvasau ॥ svalpAjyAhutivinyAsAdArdradravyodbhavastathA ॥ 23 ॥

प्रादुर्भूतस्ततो धूमो भूयांस्तत्र समंततः॥ तादृग् येन तमो भूतं वेदीभूमिविनिर्मितम् ॥ २४ ॥

So much so that darkness enveloped the whole altar ground (and the neighbourhood).

prAdurbhUtastato dhUmo bhUyAMstatra samaMtataH॥ tAdRg yena tamo bhUtaM vedIbhUmivinirmitam ॥ 24 ॥

ततो धूमाकुले नेत्रे महेशः परमेश्वरः ॥ हस्ताभ्यां छादयामास बहुलीलाकरः प्रभुः ॥२५॥

Then lord Śiva, the supreme God, indulged in many sports, covered his eyes (apparently) afflicted by smoke.

english translation

tato dhUmAkule netre mahezaH paramezvaraH ॥ hastAbhyAM chAdayAmAsa bahulIlAkaraH prabhuH ॥25॥
