आश्रित्य रूपं जटिलं करालं दंष्ट्रायुधं तीक्ष्णनखं सुनासम् ।। सैंहं च नारं सुविदारितास्यं मार्तंडकोटिप्रतिमं सुघोरम् ।। २६ ।।

The noble soul Viṣṇu assumed the form partly of lion and partly of man. His head was matted and full of manes. Sharp fangs were his weapons. The claws were keen and pointed. The snout was finely shaped. The mouth was wide open.

english translation

Azritya rUpaM jaTilaM karAlaM daMSTrAyudhaM tIkSNanakhaM sunAsam || saiMhaM ca nAraM suvidAritAsyaM mArtaMDakoTipratimaM sughoram || 26 ||

युगांतकालाग्निसमप्रभावं जगन्मयं किं बहुभिर्वचोभिः ।। अस्तं रवौसोऽपि हि गच्छतीशो गतोऽसुराणां नगरीं महात्मा ।। २७ ।।

The body was terrible and refulgent like a crore of suns, blazing and powerful like the fire at the time of dissolution. He was identical with the universe. More words need not be used to describe him. When the sun was about to set, the lord went to the city of the Asuras.

english translation

yugAMtakAlAgnisamaprabhAvaM jaganmayaM kiM bahubhirvacobhiH || astaM ravauso'pi hi gacchatIzo gato'surANAM nagarIM mahAtmA || 27 ||

कृत्वा च युद्धं प्रबलैस्स दैत्यैर्हत्वाथ तान्दैत्यगणान्गृहीत्वा ।। बभ्राम तत्राद्रुतविक्रमश्च बभंज तांस्तानसुरान्नृसिंहः ।। २८ ।।

The Man-lion fought with the powerful Daityas. He killed many of them. He held them up and whirled. Exhibiting wonderful prowess he smashed and crushed the various Asuras.

kRtvA ca yuddhaM prabalaissa daityairhatvAtha tAndaityagaNAngRhItvA || babhrAma tatrAdrutavikramazca babhaMja tAMstAnasurAnnRsiMhaH || 28 ||

दृष्टस्स दैत्यैरतुलप्रभावस्ते रेभिरे ते हि तथैव सर्वे ।। सिंहं च तं सर्वमयं निरीक्ष्य प्रह्लादनामा दितिजेन्द्रपुत्रः ।। उवाच राजानमयं मृगेन्द्रो जगन्मयः किं समुपागतश्च ।। २९ ।।

On seeing that omniformed lion, the son of the lord of Daityas, Prahlāda,said to the king, his father.

english translation

dRSTassa daityairatulaprabhAvaste rebhire te hi tathaiva sarve || siMhaM ca taM sarvamayaM nirIkSya prahlAdanAmA ditijendraputraH || uvAca rAjAnamayaM mRgendro jaganmayaH kiM samupAgatazca || 29 ||

प्रह्लाद उवाच।। एष प्रविष्टो भगवाननंतो नृसिंहमात्रो नगरं त्वदंतः ।। निवृत्य युद्धाच्छ रणं प्रयाहि पश्यामि सिंहस्य करालमूर्त्तिम् ।।2.5.43.३०।।

Prahlāda said: Is it the universe-formed lord who has come as the majestic lion? The infinite lord in the form of Man-lionhas come within your city. Desist from fight and seek refuge in him. I see the terrible form of the lion.

english translation

prahlAda uvAca|| eSa praviSTo bhagavAnanaMto nRsiMhamAtro nagaraM tvadaMtaH || nivRtya yuddhAccha raNaM prayAhi pazyAmi siMhasya karAlamUrttim ||2.5.43.30||
