    अजोऽपि सन्नव्ययात्मा भूतानामीश्वरोऽपि सन् । प्रकृतिं स्वामधिष्ठाय सम्भवाम्यात्ममायया ॥ ४-६ ॥ajo'pi sannavyayAtmA bhUtAnAmIzvaro'pi san । prakRtiM svAmadhiSThAya sambhavAmyAtmamAyayA ॥ 4-6 ॥Though I am birthless, undecaying by nature, and Shri Bhagvan of beings, (still) by subjugating My Prakriti (nature), I take birth by means of My own Yogmaya.

I know them all, but you do not know them.

    अर्जुन उवाच । अपरं भवतो जन्म परं जन्म विवस्वतः । कथमेतद्विजानीयां त्वमादौ प्रोक्तवानिति ॥ ४-४ ॥arjuna uvAca । aparaM bhavato janma paraM janma vivasvataH । kathametadvijAnIyAM tvamAdau proktavAniti ॥ 4-4 ॥Arjuna said: Later was your birth, and earlier the birth of Vivasvan(the Sun) in the beginning of evolution How then am I to understand that you taught it (yoga) in the beginning?

    स एवायं मया तेऽद्य योगः प्रोक्तः पुरातनः । भक्तोऽसि मे सखा चेति रहस्यं ह्येतदुत्तमम् ॥ ४-३ ॥sa evAyaM mayA te'dya yogaH proktaH purAtanaH । bhakto'si me sakhA ceti rahasyaM hyetaduttamam ॥ 4-3 ॥It is the same ancient Yoga which is now taught to you by Me, as you are My devotee and My friend. For, this is a highest profound mystery.

    एवं परम्पराप्राप्तमिमं राजर्षयो विदुः । स कालेनेह महता योगो नष्टः परन्तप ॥ ४-२ ॥evaM paramparAprAptamimaM rAjarSayo viduH । sa kAleneha mahatA yogo naSTaH parantapa ॥ 4-2 ॥Thus handed down in succession, the Rajrishi (king sages) knew this (Karma Yoga). But with long lapse of time, O Parantapa (destroyer of the foes), that Yoga was lost to the world.

    श्रीभगवानुवाच । इमं विवस्वते योगं प्रोक्तवानहमव्ययम् । विवस्वान्मनवे प्राह मनुरिक्ष्वाकवेऽब्रवीत् ॥ ४-१ ॥zrIbhagavAnuvAca । imaM vivasvate yogaM proktavAnahamavyayam । vivasvAnmanave prAha manurikSvAkave'bravIt ॥ 4-1 ॥Shri Bhagvan said: I imparted this imperishable yoga to Vivasvan; Vivasvan taught it to his son viavaswat Manu; Manu taught it to his son maharaja Ikshvaku.

    एवं बुद्धेः परं बुद्ध्वा संस्तभ्यात्मानमात्मना । जहि शत्रुं महाबाहो कामरूपं दुरासदम् ॥ ३-४३ ॥evaM buddheH paraM buddhvA saMstabhyAtmAnamAtmanA । jahi zatruM mahAbAho kAmarUpaM durAsadam ॥ 3-43 ॥Thus, knowing that which is higher than the intellect and fixing the mind with the help of the intellect in Karma Yoga, O Arjuna, slay this enemy which wears the form of desire, and which is difficult to overcome.

    इन्द्रियाणि पराण्याहुरिन्द्रियेभ्यः परं मनः । मनसस्तु परा बुद्धिर्यो बुद्धेः परतस्तु सः ॥ ३-४२ ॥indriyANi parANyAhurindriyebhyaH paraM manaH । manasastu parA buddhiryo buddheH paratastu saH ॥ 3-42 ॥The senses are superior (to the body); superior to the senses is the mind; superior to the mind is the intellect; one who is superior even to the intellect is He (the Self).

    तस्मात्त्वमिन्द्रियाण्यादौ नियम्य भरतर्षभ । पाप्मानं प्रजहि ह्येनं ज्ञानविज्ञाननाशनम् ॥ ३-४१ ॥tasmAttvamindriyANyAdau niyamya bharatarSabha । pApmAnaM prajahi hyenaM jJAnavijJAnanAzanam ॥ 3-41 ॥Therefore, O Arjuna, first control thy senses and then slay desire, for it is full of sin, and is the destroyer of knowledge and of wisdom.

    इन्द्रियाणि मनो बुद्धिरस्याधिष्ठानमुच्यते । एतैर्विमोहयत्येष ज्ञानमावृत्य देहिनम् ॥ ३-४०॥indriyANi mano buddhirasyAdhiSThAnamucyate । etairvimohayatyeSa jJAnamAvRtya dehinam ॥ 3-40॥The senses, mind, and the intellect are said to be its abode. This one diversely deludes the embodied being by veiling Knowledge with the help of these.
