    किं कर्म किमकर्मेति कवयोऽप्यत्र मोहिताः । तत्ते कर्म प्रवक्ष्यामि यज्ज्ञात्वा मोक्ष्यसेऽशुभात् ॥ ४-१६ ॥kiM karma kimakarmeti kavayo'pyatra mohitAH । tatte karma pravakSyAmi yajjJAtvA mokSyase'zubhAt ॥ 4-16 ॥What is action? What is inaction? As to this even the wise are confused. Therefore I shall teach thee such action (the nature of action and inaction) by knowing which thou shalt be liberated from the evil (of Samsara, the wheel of birth and death).

Thererfore you undertake action itself as was performed earlier by the ancient ones.

    न मां कर्माणि लिम्पन्ति न मे कर्मफले स्पृहा । इति मां योऽभिजानाति कर्मभिर्न स बध्यते ॥ ४-१४ ॥na mAM karmANi limpanti na me karmaphale spRhA । iti mAM yo'bhijAnAti karmabhirna sa badhyate ॥ 4-14 ॥Works do not contaminate Me. In Me there is no desire for fruits of actions. He who understands Me thus is not bound by actions.

    चातुर्वर्ण्यं मया सृष्टं गुणकर्मविभागशः । तस्य कर्तारमपि मां विद्ध्यकर्तारमव्ययम् ॥ ४-१३ ॥cAturvarNyaM mayA sRSTaM guNakarmavibhAgazaH । tasya kartAramapi mAM viddhyakartAramavyayam ॥ 4-13 ॥The system of four stations was created by Me according to distinction of Gunas and Karma. Though I am their creator, know Me as non-agent and immutable.

Howsoever men try to worship Me, so do I welcome them. By whatever path they travel, it leads to Me at last.

    वीतरागभयक्रोधा मन्मया मामुपाश्रिताः । बहवो ज्ञानतपसा पूता मद्भावमागताः ॥ ४-१० ॥vItarAgabhayakrodhA manmayA mAmupAzritAH । bahavo jJAnatapasA pUtA madbhAvamAgatAH ॥ 4-10 ॥Many persons, who are free from passion, fear and anger; are full of Me; take refuge in Me; and have become pure by the austerity of wisdom-they have come to My being.

    जन्म कर्म च मे दिव्यमेवं यो वेत्ति तत्त्वतः । त्यक्त्वा देहं पुनर्जन्म नैति मामेति सोऽर्जुन ॥ ४-९ ॥janma karma ca me divyamevaM yo vetti tattvataH । tyaktvA dehaM punarjanma naiti mAmeti so'rjuna ॥ 4-9 ॥He who thus know, in their true light, My divine birth and action, having abandoned the body, is not born again, he becomes one with Me, O Arjuna.

    परित्राणाय साधूनां विनाशाय च दुष्कृताम् । धर्मसंस्थापनार्थाय सम्भवामि युगे युगे ॥ ४-८ ॥paritrANAya sAdhUnAM vinAzAya ca duSkRtAm । dharmasaMsthApanArthAya sambhavAmi yuge yuge ॥ 4-8 ॥For the protection of the pious, the destruction of the evil-doers, and establishing Dharma (righteousness), I incarnate myself in every age.

    यदा यदा हि धर्मस्य ग्लानिर्भवति भारत । अभ्युत्थानमधर्मस्य तदात्मानं सृजाम्यहम् ॥ ४-७ ॥yadA yadA hi dharmasya glAnirbhavati bhArata । abhyutthAnamadharmasya tadAtmAnaM sRjAmyaham ॥ 4-7 ॥O descendant of Bharat, whenever there is a decline of Dharma (righteousness) and uprising of Adharma (unrighteousness), then I incarnate Myself.
