    श्रीशुक उवाच कर्मणा कर्मनिर्हारो न ह्यात्यन्तिक इष्यते । अविद्वदधिकारित्वात्प्रायश्चित्तं विमर्शनम् ॥ ६-१-११ ॥zrIzuka uvAca karmaNA karmanirhAro na hyAtyantika iSyate । avidvadadhikAritvAtprAyazcittaM vimarzanam ॥ 6-1-11 ॥Śukadeva Gosvāmī, the son of Vedavyāsa, answered: My dear King, since acts meant to neutralize impious actions are also fruitive, they will not release one from the tendency to act fruitively. Persons who subject themselves to the rules and regulations of atonement are not at all intelligent. Indeed, they are in the mode of darkness. Unless one is freed from the mode of ignorance, trying to counteract one action through another is useless because this will not uproot one’s desires. Thus even though one may superficially seem pious, he will undoubtedly be prone to act impiously. Therefore real atonement is enlightenment in perfect knowledge, Vedānta, by which one understands the Supreme Absolute Truth. ॥ 6-1-11 ॥

    आपत्सु न प्रकम्पन्ते वायुवेगैरिवाचलाः । इत्युक्तस्तद्वनं सर्वं विचचार सलक्ष्मणः ॥ ३-६७-८Apatsu na prakampante vAyuvegairivAcalAH । ityuktastadvanaM sarvaM vicacAra salakSmaNaH ॥ 3-67-8in difficulties just as mountains are not shaken by the speed of the wind.' Thus advised, accompanied by Lakshmana, roamed in the forest and . - ॥ 3-67-8॥

    प्रवृत्तिलक्षणश्चैव त्रैगुण्यविषयो मुने । योऽसावलीनप्रकृतेर्गुणसर्गः पुनः पुनः ॥ ६-१-२ ॥pravRttilakSaNazcaiva traiguNyaviSayo mune । yo'sAvalInaprakRterguNasargaH punaH punaH ॥ 6-1-2 ॥O great sage Śukadeva Gosvāmī, unless the living entity is freed from the infection of the material modes of nature, he receives different types of bodies in which to enjoy or suffer, and according to the body, he is understood to have various inclinations. By following these inclinations he traverses the path called pravṛtti-mārga, by which one may be elevated to the heavenly planets, as you have already described ॥ in the Third Canto॥. ॥ 6-1-2 ॥

    राजोवाच निवृत्तिमार्गः कथित आदौ भगवता यथा । क्रमयोगोपलब्धेन ब्रह्मणा यदसंसृतिः ॥ ६-१-१ ॥rAjovAca nivRttimArgaH kathita Adau bhagavatA yathA । kramayogopalabdhena brahmaNA yadasaMsRtiH ॥ 6-1-1 ॥Mahārāja Parīkṣit said: O my lord, O Śukadeva Gosvāmī, you have already described ॥ in the Second Canto॥ the path of liberation ॥ nivṛtti-mārga॥. By following that path, one is certainly elevated gradually to the highest planetary system, Brahmaloka, from which one is promoted to the spiritual world along with Lord Brahmā. Thus one’s repetition of birth and death in the material world ceases. ॥ 6-1-1 ॥

    पूर्वजोऽप्युक्तमात्रस्तु लक्ष्मणेन सुभाषितम् । सारग्राही महासारं प्रतिजग्राह राघवः ॥ ३-६७-१pUrvajo'pyuktamAtrastu lakSmaNena subhASitam । sAragrAhI mahAsAraM pratijagrAha rAghavaH ॥ 3-67-1Even though Rama was elder, he could grasp the quintessence of the wise counsel only after Lakshmana had said it. ॥ 3-67-1॥

The wise apply their minds and know what is right and what is wrong. ॥ 3-66-15॥
