भवा॑ मि॒त्रो न शेव्यो॑ घृ॒तासु॑ति॒र्विभू॑तद्युम्न एव॒या उ॑ स॒प्रथा॑: । अधा॑ ते विष्णो वि॒दुषा॑ चि॒दर्ध्य॒: स्तोमो॑ य॒ज्ञश्च॒ राध्यो॑ ह॒विष्म॑ता ॥ भवा मित्रो न शेव्यो घृतासुतिर्विभूतद्युम्न एवया उ सप्रथाः । अधा ते विष्णो विदुषा चिदर्ध्यः स्तोमो यज्ञश्च राध्यो हविष्मता ॥

Be (to us), Viṣṇu, like a friend, the giver of happiness, the acepter of oblations, abounding with food, the granter of protection, and every way accessible; on which account your praise is to be repeatedly recited by the wise, and your worship to be celebrated by the offerer of oblations.

bhavA॑ mi॒tro na zevyo॑ ghR॒tAsu॑ti॒rvibhU॑tadyumna eva॒yA u॑ sa॒prathA॑: | adhA॑ te viSNo vi॒duSA॑ ci॒dardhya॒: stomo॑ ya॒jJazca॒ rAdhyo॑ ha॒viSma॑tA || bhavA mitro na zevyo ghRtAsutirvibhUtadyumna evayA u saprathAH | adhA te viSNo viduSA cidardhyaH stomo yajJazca rAdhyo haviSmatA ||

यः पू॒र्व्याय॑ वे॒धसे॒ नवी॑यसे सु॒मज्जा॑नये॒ विष्ण॑वे॒ ददा॑शति । यो जा॒तम॑स्य मह॒तो महि॒ ब्रव॒त्सेदु॒ श्रवो॑भि॒र्युज्यं॑ चिद॒भ्य॑सत् ॥ यः पूर्व्याय वेधसे नवीयसे सुमज्जानये विष्णवे ददाशति । यो जातमस्य महतो महि ब्रवत्सेदु श्रवोभिर्युज्यं चिदभ्यसत् ॥

He who presents (offerings) to Viṣṇu, the ancient, the creator, the recent, the self-born; he who celebrates the great birth of that mighty one; he verily possessed of abundance, attains (the station) that is to be sought (by all).

english translation

yaH pU॒rvyAya॑ ve॒dhase॒ navI॑yase su॒majjA॑naye॒ viSNa॑ve॒ dadA॑zati | yo jA॒tama॑sya maha॒to mahi॒ brava॒tsedu॒ zravo॑bhi॒ryujyaM॑ cida॒bhya॑sat || yaH pUrvyAya vedhase navIyase sumajjAnaye viSNave dadAzati | yo jAtamasya mahato mahi bravatsedu zravobhiryujyaM cidabhyasat ||

तमु॑ स्तोतारः पू॒र्व्यं यथा॑ वि॒द ऋ॒तस्य॒ गर्भं॑ ज॒नुषा॑ पिपर्तन । आस्य॑ जा॒नन्तो॒ नाम॑ चिद्विवक्तन म॒हस्ते॑ विष्णो सुम॒तिं भ॑जामहे ॥ तमु स्तोतारः पूर्व्यं यथा विद ऋतस्य गर्भं जनुषा पिपर्तन । आस्य जानन्तो नाम चिद्विवक्तन महस्ते विष्णो सुमतिं भजामहे ॥

Hymners, propitiate of your own accord that ancient Viṣṇu, since you know him as the germ of sacrifice, cognizant of his greatness, celebrate his name; may we, Viṣṇu, enjoy your favour.

tamu॑ stotAraH pU॒rvyaM yathA॑ vi॒da R॒tasya॒ garbhaM॑ ja॒nuSA॑ pipartana | Asya॑ jA॒nanto॒ nAma॑ cidvivaktana ma॒haste॑ viSNo suma॒tiM bha॑jAmahe || tamu stotAraH pUrvyaM yathA vida Rtasya garbhaM januSA pipartana | Asya jAnanto nAma cidvivaktana mahaste viSNo sumatiM bhajAmahe ||

तम॑स्य॒ राजा॒ वरु॑ण॒स्तम॒श्विना॒ क्रतुं॑ सचन्त॒ मारु॑तस्य वे॒धस॑: । दा॒धार॒ दक्ष॑मुत्त॒मम॑ह॒र्विदं॑ व्र॒जं च॒ विष्णु॒: सखि॑वाँ अपोर्णु॒ते ॥ तमस्य राजा वरुणस्तमश्विना क्रतुं सचन्त मारुतस्य वेधसः । दाधार दक्षमुत्तममहर्विदं व्रजं च विष्णुः सखिवाँ अपोर्णुते ॥

The royal Varuṇa associates (himself) with the sacrifice of the pious worshipper, assisted by the company of the priests; the Aśvins (unite with it); Viṣṇu, with his friend (Indra), possesses supreme heaven-conferring power, and sits upon the clouds.

आ यो वि॒वाय॑ स॒चथा॑य॒ दैव्य॒ इन्द्रा॑य॒ विष्णु॑: सु॒कृते॑ सु॒कृत्त॑रः । वे॒धा अ॑जिन्वत्त्रिषध॒स्थ आर्य॑मृ॒तस्य॑ भा॒गे यज॑मान॒माभ॑जत् ॥ आ यो विवाय सचथाय दैव्य इन्द्राय विष्णुः सुकृते सुकृत्तरः । वेधा अजिन्वत्त्रिषधस्थ आर्यमृतस्य भागे यजमानमाभजत् ॥

The divine Viṣṇu, the best of the doers of good deeds, who came to the pious instrumental tutor of the rite, to assist (at its celebration), knowing (the desire of the worshipper), and present at the three connected periods (of worship), shows favour to te Arya, and admits the author if the ceremony to a share of the sacrifice.

Chapter 157

Verses 1-5
