न चैकचित्ततन्त्रं वस्तु तदप्रमाणकं तदा किं स्यात् ॥४-१६॥
Object is not dependent on one mind because if it were so, then what will happen to that object when that one mind is not in existence.
english translation
कोई भी वस्तु या पदार्थ किसी भी एक चित्त के अधीन नहीं होती है । क्योंकि जब उस चित्त का अस्तित्व नहीं रहेगा । अर्थात चित्त के अभाव में उस वस्तु का क्या होगा ?
hindi translation
तदुपरागापेक्षित्वाच्चित्तस्य वस्तु ज्ञाताज्ञातम् ॥४-१७॥
Things are known or unknown to the mind, being de-pendent on the colouring which they give to the mind.
english translation
उस बाहरी अर्थात दिखाई देने वाली वस्तु या पदार्थ के साथ सम्बन्ध रखने की कामना रखने वाले चित्त के लिए बाह्य पदार्थ ज्ञात ( जिनकी जानकारी होती है ) और अज्ञात ( जिनकी जानकारी नहीं होती ) दो प्रकार के होते हैं ।

सदा ज्ञाताश्चित्तवृत्तयस्तत्प्रभोः पुरुषस्यापरिणामित्वात् ॥४-१८॥
Because the Atman, the Lord of the mind, is unchangeable, the mind’s fluctuations are always known to it.

उस चित्त के स्वामी अर्थात आत्मा के अपरिवर्तनशील होने से उसे चित्त की सभी वृत्तियों का सदा ज्ञान रहता है ।
hindi translation
न तत्स्वाभासं दृश्यत्वात् ॥४-१९॥
The mind-stuff is not self-luminous because it is an object of perception by the Purusha.
english translation
वह चित्त दृश्य होने के कारण ( प्रकृति से निर्मित ) स्वयं ज्ञानवान ( चेतन ) नहीं है ।
hindi translation
एकसमये चोभयानवधारणम् ॥४-२०॥
Moreover, it is impossible for it to be of both ways (as perceiver and perceived) at the same time.
english translation
एक ही समय में एक साथ चित्त व विषय दोनों को ही एक साथ ग्रहण नहीं किया जा सकता । अर्थात एक ही समय में चित्त और विषय का ज्ञान एक साथ नहीं हो सकता ।
