जडतानाम सर्वकार्याप्रतिपत्तिः । इष्टानिष्टश्रवणदर्शनव्याध्यादिभिर्विभावैः समुत्पद्यते । तामभिनयेदकथनाविभाषणतूष्णीम्भावाप्रतिभाऽनिमेषनिरीक्षणपरवशत्वादिभिरनुभावैः । अत्रार्या भवति - इष्टं वाऽनिष्टं वा सुखदुःखे वा न वेत्ति यो मोहात् । तूष्णीकः परवशगो भवति स जडसंज्ञितः पुरुषः ॥ ६६॥

Stupor (jaḍatā) is caused by Determinants such as cessation of all activity, hearing of a much desired thing or a [very] harmful thing, sickness and the like, It is to be represented on the stage by Consequents such as not uttering any word, speaking indistinctly, remaining absolutely silent, looking with a steadfast gaze, dependence on others and the like. There is an Āryā on this point: 66. A man is called stupid when due to senselessness he cannot distinguish between good and evil as well as happiness and misery, and remains silent, and dependent on others.

jaDatAnAma sarvakAryApratipattiH | iSTAniSTazravaNadarzanavyAdhyAdibhirvibhAvaiH samutpadyate | tAmabhinayedakathanAvibhASaNatUSNImbhAvApratibhA'nimeSanirIkSaNaparavazatvAdibhiranubhAvaiH | atrAryA bhavati - iSTaM vA'niSTaM vA sukhaduHkhe vA na vetti yo mohAt | tUSNIkaH paravazago bhavati sa jaDasaMjJitaH puruSaH || 66||
