दैन्यं नाम दौर्गत्यमनस्तापादिभिर्विभावैः समुत्पद्यते । तस्याधृतिशिरोरोगगात्रगौरवान्यमनस्कतामृजापरिवर्जना- दिभिरनुभावैरभिनयः प्रयोक्तव्यः । अत्रार्या - चिन्तौत्सुक्यसमुत्था दुःखाद्या भवति दीनतां पुंसाम् । सर्वमृजापरिहारैर्विविधोऽभिनयो भवेत्तस्य ॥ ४९॥

Depression (dainya) is caused by Determinants such as poverty, mental agony and the like. It is to be represented on the stage by Consequents such as want of self-command, dullness of the body, absent-mindedness, giving up of cleansing [the body] and the like. There is in Āryā on this point: 49. Depression of men proceeds from anxiety, eager expectation and misery. Different modes of representing it on the stage includes giving up of cleansing [the body] in any way.
