नृत्तप्रयोगः सृष्टो यः स ताण्डव इति स्मृतः । ऋषय ऊचुः - यदा प्राप्त्यर्थमर्थानां तज्ज्ञैरभिनयः कृतः ॥ २६१॥
The dance technique created for the purpose of obtaining the desired results is remembered as Tāṇḍava. The sages said: "When the purpose of obtaining results is fulfilled, that is when the expression of performance is created by the knowledgeable ones."
