वालं नवकलं वेषां न तेषां साधु सम्मतम् । सन्निपाताङ्गविन्यासं कलानियमतः कृतम् ॥ ९६॥

Those who have the short (lit. young) ॥ Āsārita॥ as consisting of nine Kalās, are not supported by the good authorities. The placing of the Sannipāta ॥ in it॥ has been made ॥ by them॥ according to the rule of the Kalā.

english translation

vAlaM navakalaM veSAM na teSAM sAdhu sammatam । sannipAtAGgavinyAsaM kalAniyamataH kRtam ॥ 96॥

तेषां सम्मुखतालं ध्रुवपातैरेव नियमतात्मानम् । तस्य कलापाक्षरगुरुलघुवर्णस्थितिं वक्ष्ये ॥ ९७॥

For them the two Tālas at the Mukha of it (i.e., the short Āsārita) are regulated by the Dhruvā Pāta. I shall ॥ now॥ speak of its ॥ full॥ measure (māna) and ॥ sequence of॥ long and short syllables.

teSAM sammukhatAlaM dhruvapAtaireva niyamatAtmAnam । tasya kalApAkSaragurulaghuvarNasthitiM vakSye ॥ 97॥

ज्येष्ठस्य कला ह्यष्टौ मुखं भवेन्मध्यमस्य समूलकम् । षडिर्लयान्तरे स्यात्पञ्चैव कलाः कनिष्ठस्य ॥ ९८॥

For the eldest (flute), there are eight notes, and its mouthpiece is at the root (base). For the middle one, there are six notes within the measure of tempo, and for the smallest flute, there are five notes.

आदावन्ते गुरूणी मध्ये च लघूनि बालतः प्रभृति । अष्टौ द्वादश षोडश विंशतिरपि वाक्षराणि स्युः ॥ ९९॥

At the beginning, the syllables are long, in the middle short, and for the bāla (short) Āsārita, accordingly. There are eight, twelve, sixteen, and even twenty syllables in the respective Upavahanas.

आसारितोपवहनेष्वादावासारणानि युक्तानि । तान्यक्षराणि वक्ष्ये यानि पुरा ब्रह्मगीतानि ॥ १००॥

In the Upavahanas of the Āsāritas, the Āsāraṇās are employed at the beginning. I shall now speak about the syllables which were sung in the past by Brahman.

AsAritopavahaneSvAdAvAsAraNAni yuktAni । tAnyakSarANi vakSye yAni purA brahmagItAni ॥ 100॥
