तेषां तु वचनं श्रुत्वा मुनीनां भरतो मुनिः । प्रत्युवाच ततो वाक्यं नाट्यवेदकथां प्रति ॥ ६॥

Hearing these words of the sages, Bharata spoke thus in reply about the Nāṭyaveda:

teSAM tu vacanaM zrutvA munInAM bharato muniH | pratyuvAca tato vAkyaM nATyavedakathAM prati || 6||

भवद्भिः शुचिभिर्भूत्वा तथाऽवहितमानसैः । श्रूयतां नाट्यवेदस्य सम्भवो ब्रह्मनिर्मितः ॥ ७॥

Having purified yourselves and with attentive minds, listen to the origin of the Nāṭyaveda, which was created by Brahmā.

english translation

bhavadbhiH zucibhirbhUtvA tathA'vahitamAnasaiH | zrUyatAM nATyavedasya sambhavo brahmanirmitaH || 7||

पूर्वं कृतयुगे विप्रा वृत्ते स्वायंभुवेऽन्तरे । त्रेतायुगेऽथ सम्प्राप्ते मनोर्वैवस्वतस्य तु ॥ ८॥

In the beginning, during the Golden Age (Kṛtayuga), between the reign of Svāyambhuva Manu, and with the onset of the Silver Age (Tretāyuga) during the time of Vaivasvata Manu,

pUrvaM kRtayuge viprA vRtte svAyaMbhuve'ntare | tretAyuge'tha samprApte manorvaivasvatasya tu || 8||

ग्राम्यधर्मप्रवृत्ते तु कामलोभवशं गते । ईर्ष्याक्रोधादिसंमूढे लोके सुखितदुःखिते ॥ ९॥

When people became engrossed in worldly duties, driven by desires and greed, overwhelmed by jealousy, anger, and other delusions, the world was filled with both happiness and sorrow.

grAmyadharmapravRtte tu kAmalobhavazaM gate | IrSyAkrodhAdisaMmUDhe loke sukhitaduHkhite || 9||

देवदानवगन्धर्वयक्षरक्षोमहोरगैः । जम्बुद्वीपे समाक्रान्ते लोकपालप्रतिष्ठिते ॥ १०॥

The Jambudvīpa, protected by the Lokapālas (guardians of the worlds), was invaded by gods, demons, Gandharvas, Yakṣas, Rākṣasas, and great serpents.
