महेन्द्रप्रमुखैर्देवैरुक्तः किल पितामहः । क्रीडनीयकमिच्छामो दृष्यं श्रव्यं च यद्भवेत् ॥ ११॥

The great Indra and other gods, thus addressed by Brahmā, said, "We desire a form of entertainment that is both visible and audible."

english translation

न वेदव्यवहारोऽयं संश्राव्यः शूद्रजातिषु । तस्मात्सृजापरं वेदं पञ्चमं सार्ववर्णिकम् ॥ १२॥

"This practice of the Vedas is not meant to be heard by those born into the Śūdra caste. Therefore, please create another Veda, the fifth one, which will be universal and belong to all the varṇas."

english translation

एवमस्त्विति तानुक्त्वा देवराजं विसृज्य च । सस्मार चतुरो वेदान्योगमास्थाय तत्त्ववित् ॥ १३॥

‘Let it be so,’ said he in reply, and then, having dismissed the king of gods (Indra), he resorted to yoga and recalled to mind the four Vedas.

english translation

(नेमे वेदा यतः श्राव्याः स्त्रीशूद्राद्यासु जातिषु । वेदमन्यत्ततः स्रक्ष्ये सर्वश्राव्यं तु पञ्चमम् ॥) धर्म्यमर्थ्यं यशस्यं च सोपदेश्यं ससङ्ग्रहम् । भविष्यतश्च लोकस्य सर्वकर्मानुदर्शकम् ॥ १४॥

(These Vedas are not to be taught to women, Śūdras and other castes. I shall create another Veda, the fifth, which is to be taught to all.) It is righteous, beneficial, glorious, with instructions, with summaries, and shows all actions for the future world.

english translation

सर्वशात्रार्थसम्पन्नं सर्वशिल्पप्रवर्तकम् । नाट्याख्यं पञ्चमं वेदं सेतिहासं करोम्यहम् ॥ १५॥

I shall create the fifth Veda, called Nāṭya, enriched with the meaning of all scriptures and the teachings of all crafts, incorporating Semi-historical Tales (itihāsa).
