एवं सङ्कल्प्य भगवान् सर्ववेदाननुस्मरन् । नाट्यवेदं ततश्चक्रे चतुर्वेदाङ्गसम्भवम् ॥ १६॥

With this resolve the Holy One from his memory of all the Vedas, shaped this Nāṭyaveda compiled from the four of them.

जग्राह पाठ्यमृग्वेदात्सामभ्यो गीतमेव च । यजुर्वेदादभिनयान् रसानाथर्वणादपि ॥ १७॥

He took the recitative from the Ṛgveda, the song from the Sāma Veda, the Histrionic Representation (abhinaya) from the Yajurveda, and Sentiments (rasa) from the Atharvaveda.

वेदोपवेदैः सम्बद्धो नाट्यवेदो महात्मना । एवं भगवता सृष्टो ब्रह्मणा सर्ववेदिना ॥ १८॥

The Nāṭyaveda, connected with the Vedas and their subsidiary Vedas, was thus created by the great Brahmā, the omniscient one, who is the knower of all the Vedas.

उत्पाद्य नाट्यवेदं तु ब्रह्मोवाच सुरेश्वरम् । इतिहासो मया सृष्टः स सुरेषु नियुज्यताम् ॥ १९॥

Having created the Nāṭyaveda, Brahmā said to Indra, the lord of the gods, "The Semi-historical Tales have been composed by me; let them be performed by the gods."

कुशला ये विदग्धाश्च प्रगल्भाश्च जितश्रमाः । तेष्वयं नाट्यसंज्ञो हि वेदः संक्राम्यतां त्वया ॥ २०॥

Those who are skilled, learned, bold in speech, and free from fatigue, let this Nāṭyaveda, by your grace, be passed on to them.
