[वि] दयूतं मूलं कलहस्यानुपाति; मिथॊ भेदाय महते वा रणाय यद आस्थितॊ ऽयं धृतराष्ट्रस्य पुत्रॊ; दुर्यॊधनः सृजते वैरम उग्रम ॥ २-५६-१ ॥

'Vidura said: "Gambling is the root of discord and leads to disunion. Its consequences are dire. Yet, by resorting to it, Dhritarashtra's son, Duryodhana, creates for himself severe enmity."' ॥ 2-56-1 ॥

english translation

[vi] dayUtaM mUlaM kalahasyAnupAti; mithò bhedAya mahate vA raNAya yada Asthitò 'yaM dhRtarASTrasya putrò; duryòdhanaH sRjate vairama ugrama ॥ 2-56-1 ॥

परातिपीयाः शांतनवा भैमसेनाः स बाह्लिकाः दुर्यॊधनापराधेन कृच्छ्रं पराप्स्यन्ति सर्वशः ॥ २-५६-२ ॥

'The descendants of Pratipa and Shantanu, with their fierce troops and the Vahlikas as their allies, will face destruction due to the sins of Duryodhana.' ॥ 2-56-2 ॥

english translation

parAtipIyAH zAMtanavA bhaimasenAH sa bAhlikAH duryòdhanAparAdhena kRcchraM parApsyanti sarvazaH ॥ 2-56-2 ॥

दुर्यॊधनॊ मदेनैव कषेमं राष्ट्राद अपॊहति विषाणं गौर इव मदात सवयम आरुजते बलात ॥ २-५६-३ ॥

'Duryodhana, due to his intoxication, forcibly drives away prosperity and good fortune from his kingdom, much like a furious bull that breaks its horns.' ॥ 2-56-3 ॥

english translation

duryòdhanò madenaiva kaSemaM rASTrAda apòhati viSANaM gaura iva madAta savayama Arujate balAta ॥ 2-56-3 ॥

यश चित्तम अन्वेति परस्य राजन; वीरः कविः सवाम अतिपत्य दृष्टिम नावं समुद्र इव बाल नेत्राम; आरुह्य घॊरे वयसने निमज्जेत ॥ २-५६-४ ॥

'That brave and wise person who, disregarding his foresight, follows the inclinations of another, sinks into deep trouble, much like a boat navigating the sea under the guidance of a child.' ॥ 2-56-4 ॥

yaza cittama anveti parasya rAjana; vIraH kaviH savAma atipatya dRSTima nAvaM samudra iva bAla netrAma; Aruhya ghòre vayasane nimajjeta ॥ 2-56-4 ॥

दुर्यॊधनॊ गलहते पाण्डवेन; परियायसे तवं जयतीति तच च अतिनर्माज जायते संप्रहारॊ; यतॊ विनाशः समुपैति पुंसाम ॥ २-५६-५ ॥

'Duryodhana, while gambling with the sons of Pandu, is reveling in his apparent success. However, such triumphs lead to conflict, which ultimately results in the destruction of men.' ॥ 2-56-5 ॥
