[ष] उपस्तीर्णा सभा राजन रन्तुं चैते कृतक्षणाः अक्षान उप्त्वा देवनस्य समयॊ ऽसतु युधिष्ठिर ।। २-५३-१ ।।

sanskrit

'Sakuni the son of Suvala addressed Yudhishthira and said, "O King, the assembly hall is prepared, and these [people] are ready to play. Having tossed the dice, let the time for gambling begin, Yudhishthira."' ।। 2-53-1 ।।

english translation

[Sa] upastIrNA sabhA rAjana rantuM caite kRtakSaNAH akSAna uptvA devanasya samayò 'satu yudhiSThira || 2-53-1 ||

hk transliteration

[य] निकृतिर देवनं पापं न कषात्रॊ ऽतर पराक्रमः न च नीतिर धरुवा राजन किं तवं दयूतं परशंससि ।। २-५३-२ ।।

sanskrit

'Yudhishthira replied, "Gambling that involves deceit is indeed sinful. It contains no Kshatriya valor and lacks any true morality. Why, then, O king, do you extol this game of gambling?"' ।। 2-53-2 ।।

english translation

[ya] nikRtira devanaM pApaM na kaSAtrò 'tara parAkramaH na ca nItira dharuvA rAjana kiM tavaM dayUtaM parazaMsasi || 2-53-2 ||

hk transliteration

न हि मानं परशंसन्ति निकृतौ कितवस्य ह शकुने मैव नॊ जैषीर अमार्गेण नृशंसवत ।। २-५३-३ ।।

sanskrit

'The wise do not commend the pride that gamesters take in deceitful play. O Sakuni, if you must defeat us, do so not like a scoundrel, but with honor and integrity.' ।। 2-53-3 ।।

english translation

na hi mAnaM parazaMsanti nikRtau kitavasya ha zakune maiva nò jaiSIra amArgeNa nRzaMsavata || 2-53-3 ||

[ष] यॊ ऽनवेति संख्यां निकृतौ विधिज्ञश; चेष्टास्व अखिन्नः कितवॊ ऽकषजासु महामतिर यश च जानाति दयूतं; स वै सर्वं सहते परक्रियासु ।। २-५३-४ ।।

'That noble player who understands the intricacies of both winning and losing, who is adept at countering deceitful tactics, and who is proficient in all aspects of gambling truly grasps the nature of the game and endures all its trials.' ।। 2-53-4 ।।

english translation

[Sa] yò 'naveti saMkhyAM nikRtau vidhijJaza; ceSTAsva akhinnaH kitavò 'kaSajAsu mahAmatira yaza ca jAnAti dayUtaM; sa vai sarvaM sahate parakriyAsu || 2-53-4 ||

hk transliteration

अक्षग्लहः सॊ ऽभिभवेत परं; नस तेनैव कालॊ भवतीदम आत्थ दीव्यामहे पार्थिव मा विशङ्कां; कुरुष्व पाणं च चिरं च मा कृथाः ।। २-५३-५ ।।

sanskrit

'O son of Pritha, it is the act of staking at dice, which may result in either loss or gain, that poses the risk. This is why gambling is often seen as a fault. Therefore, O king, let us commence the game. Do not fear. Set the stakes and proceed without delay!' ।। 2-53-5 ।।

akSaglahaH sò 'bhibhaveta paraM; nasa tenaiva kAlò bhavatIdama Attha dIvyAmahe pArthiva mA vizaGkAM; kuruSva pANaM ca ciraM ca mA kRthAH || 2-53-5 ||
