सभेयं मे बहुरत्ना विचित्रा; शय्यासनैर उपपन्ना महार्हैः सा दृश्यतां भरातृभिः सार्धम एत्य; सुहृद दयूतं वर्तताम अत्र चेति ।। २-५१-२१ ।।

sanskrit

'Let him come here with his brothers to see my splendid assembly hall, adorned with countless jewels and gems, and furnished with costly beds and carpets. Let a friendly game of dice begin in this grand setting.' ।। 2-51-21 ।।

english translation

sabheyaM me bahuratnA vicitrA; zayyAsanaira upapannA mahArhaiH sA dRzyatAM bharAtRbhiH sArdhama etya; suhRda dayUtaM vartatAma atra ceti || 2-51-21 ||

hk transliteration

मतम आज्ञाय पुत्रस्य धृतराष्ट्रॊ नराधिपः मत्वा च दुस्तरं दैवम एतद राजा चकार ह ।। २-५१-२२ ।।

sanskrit

'King Dhritarashtra, after discerning his son’s inclinations and recognizing the inevitability of fate, proceeded as I have described.' ।। 2-51-22 ।।

english translation

matama AjJAya putrasya dhRtarASTrò narAdhipaH matvA ca dustaraM daivama etada rAjA cakAra ha || 2-51-22 ||

hk transliteration

अन्यायेन तथॊक्तस तु विदुरॊ विदुषां वरः नाभ्यनन्दद वचॊ भरातुर वचनं चेदम अब्रवीत ।। २-५१-२३ ।।

sanskrit

'Vidura, the foremost of the wise, did not approve of his brother's command. He said:' ।। 2-51-23 ।।

english translation

anyAyena tathòktasa tu vidurò viduSAM varaH nAbhyanandada vacò bharAtura vacanaM cedama abravIta || 2-51-23 ||

hk transliteration

नाभिनन्दामि नृपते परैषम एतं; मैवं कृथाः कुलनाशाद बिभेमि पुत्रैर भिन्नैः कलहस ते धरुवं सयाद; एतच छङ्के दयूतकृते नरेन्द्र ।। २-५१-२४ ।।

sanskrit

'O king, I do not endorse this order of yours. Do not proceed with it. I fear it will bring about the destruction of our race. When your sons lose their unity, discord will inevitably arise among them. This, O king, is my apprehension regarding this game of dice.' ।। 2-51-24 ।।

english translation

nAbhinandAmi nRpate paraiSama etaM; maivaM kRthAH kulanAzAda bibhemi putraira bhinnaiH kalahasa te dharuvaM sayAda; etaca chaGke dayUtakRte narendra || 2-51-24 ||

hk transliteration

[ध] नेह कषत्तः कलहस तप्स्यते मां; न चेद दैवं परतिलॊमं भविष्यत धात्रा तु दिष्टस्य वशे किलेदं सर्वं; जगच चेष्टति न सवतन्त्रम ।। २-५१-२५ ।।

sanskrit

'Dhritarashtra said, "If Fate is not adverse, this quarrel will not trouble me. The entire universe operates under the sway of its Creator, bound by the will of Fate and not free."' ।। 2-51-25 ।।

english translation

[dha] neha kaSattaH kalahasa tapsyate mAM; na ceda daivaM paratilòmaM bhaviSyata dhAtrA tu diSTasya vaze kiledaM sarvaM; jagaca ceSTati na savatantrama || 2-51-25 ||
