[ज] कथं समभवद दयूतं भरातॄणां तन महात्ययम यत्र तद वयसनं पराप्तं पाण्डवैर मे पितामहैः ॥ २-४६-१ ॥
'Janamejaya asked, 'O foremost among the learned in the Vedas, how did that fateful dice game unfold, which caused such great suffering to the Pandavas and led to the sorrow of my grandfathers?'' ॥ 2-46-1 ॥

के च तत्र सभास्तारा राजानॊ बरह्मवित्तम के चैनम अन्वमॊदन्त के चैनं परत्यषेधयन ॥ २-४६-२ ॥
'Which kings were present in that assembly, and who among them approved of the gambling match while others opposed it?' ॥ 2-46-2 ॥
english translation
विस्तरेणैतद इच्छामि कथ्यमानं तवया दविज मूलं हय एतद विनाशस्य पृथिव्या दविजसत्तम ॥ २-४६-३ ॥
'O sinless one, O chief among the twice-born, I request you to recount in detail the events that led to the world's destruction.' ॥ 2-46-3 ॥

[सूत] एवम उक्तस तदा राज्ञा वयास शिष्यः परतापवान आचचक्षे यथावृत्तं तत सर्वं सर्ववेदवित ॥ २-४६-४ ॥
'Sauti said, 'Thus instructed by the king, the powerful disciple of Vyasa, well-versed in the entire Vedas, narrated all that had transpired.'' ॥ 2-46-4 ॥

[व] शृणु मे विस्तरेणेमां कथां भरतसत्तम भूय एव महाराज यदि ते शरवणे मतिः ॥ २-४६-५ ॥
'Vaisampayana said, 'O best of the Bharatas, O great king if you wish to hear, listen as I recount everything in detail once more.'' ॥ 2-46-5 ॥
