तद्बान्धवाश्च यथा कुलस्याधं परिहरन्तो दण्डभयाच्च तस्मा एवैनां दद्युस्तथा योजयेत् ॥ १६ ॥
The family is dishonored by such a marriage. They fear sanctions after an abduction and thus prefer to give their consent.

नायिका के बान्धव, जिस प्रकार, कुल के कलंक को दूर करते हुए और राजदण्ड से आतङ्कित होकर उसे नायक को दे दें, वैसी ही योजना करनी चाहिये ॥ १६ ॥

अनन्तरं च प्रीत्युपग्रहेण रागेण तद्बान्धवान् प्रीणयेदिति ॥ १७ ॥
Thus, the young woman has obtained her hero by skillful intrigues. By affectionate behavior, beautiful gifts ,and civilities, she has him accepted by her family.

इस प्रकार जब छलछद्म से कन्या नायक को पत्नीरूप में प्राप्त हो जाये, तो प्रेमपूर्ण अनुरोधों, उपहारों और उपकारों से कन्या के बन्धु बान्धवों को प्रसन्न कर ले ॥ १७ ॥

A gandharva marriage, by simple mutual agreement, would have been preferable.

अप्रतिपद्यमानायामन्तश्चारिणीमन्यां कुलप्रमादं पूर्वसंसृष्टां प्रीयमाणां चोपगृह्य तया सह विषह्यमवकाशमेनामन्यकार्यापदेशेनानाययेत् ॥ १९ ॥
When the boy is unable to reach his goal on his own, he uses as go-between a woman of good family who has access to the girl’s home, having been intimately acquainted with and appreciated by her parents for a long time and friendly toward himself. She brings them money and, using some pretext, takes the girl to his house.

मध्यस्थों के माध्यम से गुप्त विवाह – जो नायिका स्वयं पाणिग्रहण कराने में असमर्थ हो, तो दोनों (वर एवं कन्या) पक्षों से अन्तरङ्ग सम्बन्ध रखने वाली किसी कुलवधू को धन का लोभ देकर और मध्यस्थ बनाकर, किसी बहाने से उसके साथ नायिका को निर्धारित स्थान पर बुलाये ॥ १९ ॥

ततः श्रोत्रियागारादग्निमिति समानं पूर्वेण ॥ २० ॥
Then, as above, bringing sacred fire from a priest's house, he marries her.
