The twelve houses beginning with the Ascendant are also known as (1) Tanu (body), (2) Artha (wealth), (3) Sahaja (brother), (4) Bandhava (relative), (5) Putra (son), (6) Ari (enemy), (7) Kalatra (wife), (8) Naidhana (death), (9) Dharma (virtue), (10) Kriya (work), (11) Aya (income) and (12) Vigama (loss) respectively.

There are three kinds of houses, Viz., (1) Kendra, (2) Phanapara and (3) Apoklima. The Ascendant, the fourth, the seventh and the tenth houses are called Kendras ; the 2nd, 5th, 8th and 11th houses, are termed Phanaparas ; and the 3rd, 6th, 9th and 12th houses, Apoklimas.

udayasukhakAmadazamaM keMndraM tasmAtparaM phaNaparAkhyam। ApoklimaM ca paratastasmAt trividhAstu rAzayaH kalpyAH॥28॥

The term Kendra has two other names—Kantaka and Chatushtaya, while the Apoklima has another name viz., Charama. The Phanapara is otherwise known as Madhya Kendra.

The 4th and the 8th houses constitute what is known as Chaturasra (square). The 6th and 11th houses are called by the name of Shat Kona. The 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th houses are termed Upachaya (houses of increase).
