जयति जगदेकहेतुर्विश्वात्मा सर्वलोकदीपकरः। अनुदिनमुदयविनाशस्थितिकर्ता भास्करो दिनाधीशः॥१॥
There flourishes the (divine) Sun, the lord of the Day, who is the sole cause and the soul of the Universe, whose rays illumine all the worlds and who daily brings about creation, destruction and protection.

निमिषादिवत्सरान्तः कालो राशिप्रमाणमेकैकः। गणितस्कन्धे प्रोक्तं पूर्वं ग्रहलक्षणैः सार्धम्॥२॥
Time beginning with a second (time taken for a wink) and ending with a year and the measure of each sign of the zodiac have been already treated of along with the characteristics of planets in the section on astronomical calculations.

होरास्कन्धे सम्यग्दशाविभागः पुरा विनिर्दिष्टः। विस्तारिशास्त्रमार्गैर्न शक्यते मन्दबुद्धिभिर्ज्ञातुम्॥३॥
