पाशे अथ वा कबन्धे नृपमृत्युर्जनविपत्स्रुते रक्ते । कृष्णे श्यावे रूक्षे दुर्गन्धे चाशुभं भवति ॥ ९४-०६ ॥

When blood flows from a snare or a headless corpse, it portends the death of a king or disaster for the people. Furthermore, if the blood is black, dark brown, or rough in appearance, or if it emits a foul odor, it signifies an inauspicious omen.

english translation

pAze atha vA kabandhe nRpamRtyurjanavipatsrute rakte । kRSNe zyAve rUkSe durgandhe cAzubhaM bhavati ॥ 94-06 ॥

शुक्लः समः सुगन्धिः स्निग्धश्च शुभऽवहो भवेच्छेदः । गलनम्लानफलानि च दन्तस्य समानि भङ्गेन ॥ ९४-०७ ॥

If the cut be white, smooth, glossy and emitting good scent, there will be prosperity. All that I now proceed to state about the breaking of the tusks applies also to its dropping down, becoming thin, and loss of colour.

zuklaH samaH sugandhiH snigdhazca zubha'vaho bhavecchedaH । galanamlAnaphalAni ca dantasya samAni bhaGgena ॥ 94-07 ॥

मूलमध्यदशनाग्रसंस्थिता देवदैत्यमनुजाः क्रमात्ततः । स्फीतमध्यपरिपेलवं फलं शीघ्रमध्यचिरकालसम्भवम् ॥ ९४-०८ ॥

The Devas (gods), the Asuras (demons), and Naras (men) reside respectively at the root, the middle and the end of the tusks of the elephant (hasti). The effects of omens connected with these pans will therefore be great, moderate and small and they will come to pass soon, after a short time and after a long time respectively.

mUlamadhyadazanAgrasaMsthitA devadaityamanujAH kramAttataH । sphItamadhyaparipelavaM phalaM zIghramadhyacirakAlasambhavam ॥ 94-08 ॥

दन्तभङ्गफलं अत्र दक्षिणे भूपदेशबलविद्रवप्रदम् । वामतः सुतपुरोहितैभयान् हन्ति साटविकदारनायकान् ॥ ९४-०९ ॥

If the right tusk be found to break, the king, the country and the army will suffer miseries; and if the left tusk be found to break, the master, his wife, son, family, priest, the driver and the wood-men will suffer miseries.

dantabhaGgaphalaM atra dakSiNe bhUpadezabalavidravapradam । vAmataH sutapurohitaibhayAn hanti sATavikadAranAyakAn ॥ 94-09 ॥

आदिशेदुभयभङ्गदर्शनात्पार्थिवस्य सकलं कुलक्षयम् । सौम्यलग्नतिथिभऽदिभिः शुभं वर्धते अशुभं अतो अन्यथा वदेत् ॥ ९४-१० ॥

If both the tusks be found to break, the king’s whole family will meet with ruin; but if the breaking occur in benefic lagna, lunar-day or Nakṣatra and the like, there will be an increase of prosperity if it occur otherwise, there will be an increase of misery.

english translation

AdizedubhayabhaGgadarzanAtpArthivasya sakalaM kulakSayam । saumyalagnatithibha'dibhiH zubhaM vardhate azubhaM ato anyathA vadet ॥ 94-10 ॥
