याहिइत्यग्निभयं शास्ति टाटैति मृतवेदिका । धिग्धिग्दुष्कृतिम् आचष्टे सज्वाला देशनाशिनी ॥ ९०-०६ ॥

According to some, the cry of the jackal of the flaming mouth does not indicate evil. The mouth of the jackal appears bright as the Sun or fire owing to its water.

english translation

yAhiityagnibhayaM zAsti TATaiti mRtavedikA । dhigdhigduSkRtim AcaSTe sajvAlA dezanAzinI ॥ 90-06 ॥

नैव दारुणतां एके सज्वालायाः प्रचक्षते । अर्काद्यनलवत्तस्या वक्त्रं लालास्वभावतः ॥ ९०-०७ ॥

If a jackal (śivā) facing the south be seen to cry in answer to the cry of another jackal, there will be death by hanging. If it be found to do so facing the west, there will be death by drowning.

english translation

naiva dAruNatAM eke sajvAlAyAH pracakSate । arkAdyanalavattasyA vaktraM lAlAsvabhAvataH ॥ 90-07 ॥

अन्यप्रतिरुता याम्या साउद्बन्धमृतशंसिनी । वारुण्यनुरुता साएव शंसते सलिले मृतम् ॥ ९०-०८ ॥

If from one to seven jackals be seen to cry together, there will respectively be freedom from cares, the receipt of good intelligence, gain of wealth, gain of an object of desire, cares of the mind, misery to the chief person and the gain of a carriage.

anyapratirutA yAmyA sAudbandhamRtazaMsinI । vAruNyanurutA sAeva zaMsate salile mRtam ॥ 90-08 ॥

अक्षोभः श्रवणं चैष्टं धनप्राप्तिः प्रियागमः । क्षोभः प्रधानभेदश्च वाहनानां च सम्पदः ॥ ९०-०९ ॥

If eight, nine or more jackals be seen to cry together, such cry signifies nothing. If the group be found to cry in the south, just the reverse of the effects excepting the 5th and 6th will occur.

akSobhaH zravaNaM caiSTaM dhanaprAptiH priyAgamaH । kSobhaH pradhAnabhedazca vAhanAnAM ca sampadaH ॥ 90-09 ॥

फलं आ सप्तमादेतदग्राह्यं परतो रुतम् । याम्यायां तद्विपर्यस्तं फलं षट्पञ्चमादृते ॥ ९०-१० ॥

If the cry of the jackal be found to fill man with a thrill of fear and to cause the horse to pass urine and dung, there will be miseries.
