मिष्टं अन्नं अपि वैश्वदैवते वैष्णवे भवति नेत्ररोगता । धान्यलब्धिर् अपि वासवे विदुर्वारुणे विषकृतं महद्भयम् ॥ ७१-०६ ॥

Even sweet food is a Vaishnava deity, and it causes eye disease. They knew that even if they could not get grain, they would be very afraid of the poison caused by Vāruṇa.

english translation

miSTaM annaM api vaizvadaivate vaiSNave bhavati netrarogatA । dhAnyalabdhir api vAsave vidurvAruNe viSakRtaM mahadbhayam ॥ 71-06 ॥

भद्रपदासु भयं सलिलौत्थं तत्परतश्च भवेत्सुतलब्धिः । रत्नयुतिं कथयन्ति च पौष्णे यो अभिनवाम्बरं इच्छति भोक्तुम् ॥ ७१-०७ ॥

In the Pūrvabhādrapadā and Uttarabhādrapadā asterisms, there is a danger arising from water, yet following that, the birth of a son may occur; in the Revatī asterism, they speak of the acquisition of jewels for one who desires to enjoy wearing fresh garments.

bhadrapadAsu bhayaM salilautthaM tatparatazca bhavetsutalabdhiH । ratnayutiM kathayanti ca pauSNe yo abhinavAmbaraM icchati bhoktum ॥ 71-07 ॥

विप्रमतादथ भूपतिदत्तं यच्च विवाहविधावभिलब्धम् । तेषु गुणै रहितेष्वपि भोक्तुं नूतनं अम्बरमिष्टफलं स्यात् ॥ ७१-०८ ॥

It is advisable to wear new clothes even under an asterism that is devoid of good qualities, provided it is an occasion of marriage, reception of a king and one approved by worthy Brāhmaṇas.

vipramatAdatha bhUpatidattaM yacca vivAhavidhAvabhilabdham । teSu guNai rahiteSvapi bhoktuM nUtanaM ambaramiSTaphalaM syAt ॥ 71-08 ॥

भोक्तुं नवाम्बरं शस्तं ऋक्षे अपि गुणवर्जिते । विवाहे राजसम्माने ब्रह्मणाणां च सम्मते ॥ ७१-०९ ॥

Divide the garment into nine rectangles by lines joining the opposite points of trisection of the sides. The Devas occupy the four rectangles at the corners. The Naras (men) occupy the two middle squares at the two ends, and the Asuras occupy the three remaining central squares. The same remarks apply to seats and shoes.

bhoktuM navAmbaraM zastaM RkSe api guNavarjite । vivAhe rAjasammAne brahmaNANAM ca sammate ॥ 71-09 ॥

वस्त्रस्य कोणेषु वसन्ति देवा नराश्च पाशान्तदशान्तमध्ये । शेषास्त्रयश्चात्र निशाचरांशास्तथएव शय्याआसनपादुकासु ॥ ७१-१० ॥

If the inner garment be new, and if it be disfigured with ink, dung, mud and the like, or if it be cut, burnt or torn, the effects whether good or bad will fully come to pass; if the injured garment be one that has been used, the effects will be slightly felt; if the garment be a decayed one, the effects will be very slightly felt. If the outer garment be injured, the effects will be greatly felt.
