धन्विन्यमात्यवरवाजिविदेहमल्लान्पाञ्चालवैद्यवणिजो विषमऽयुधज्ञान् । हन्यान्मृगे तु झषमन्त्रिकुलानि नीचान्मन्त्राउषधीषु कुशलान्स्थविरऽयुधीयान् ॥ ५-४१ ॥
If they should be eclipsed when in the sign of Sagittarius (Dhanuṣa), ministers, fine horses, the Videhas, the Mallānas, the Pāñcālas, physicians, merchants and persons skilled in the use of destructive weapons will perish. If when in the sign of Capricornus (Makara), fishes, the families of ministers, the Cāṇḍālas, skilled magicians, physicians and old soldiers will perish.

hk transliteration by Sanscriptकुम्भे अन्तर्गिरिजान्सपश्चिमजनान्भारौद्वहांस्तस्करानाभीरान्दरदऽर्यसिंहपुरकान्हन्यात्तथा बर्बरान् । मीने सागरकूलसागरजलद्रव्याणि वन्यान् जनान्प्राज्ञान्वार्युपजीविनश्च भफलं कूर्मौपदेशाद्वदेत् ॥ ५-४२ ॥
If they should be eclipsed when in the sign of Aquarius (Kumbha), hill men, men of western countries, carriers, robbers, shephards, serpents, worthy men, lions, citizens and the people of Barbara will perish. If when in the sign of Pisces (Mīna), the products of the sea beach and of the sea, man of respectability and of learning and persons that live by water will suffer. Also those provinces will be affected which correspond to particular lunar mansions in which the eclipses happen to occur, as will be explained in the chapter (14) on Kūrmavibhāga.

kumbhe antargirijAnsapazcimajanAnbhAraudvahAMstaskarAnAbhIrAndarada'ryasiMhapurakAnhanyAttathA barbarAn । mIne sAgarakUlasAgarajaladravyANi vanyAn janAnprAjJAnvAryupajIvinazca bhaphalaM kUrmaupadezAdvadet ॥ 5-42 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptसव्यापसव्यलेहग्रसननिरोधावमर्दनऽरोहाः । आघ्रातं मध्यतमस्तमो अन्त्य इति ते दश ग्रासाः ॥ ५-४३ ॥
Solar and Lunar eclipses are of ten kinds and they are technically known as—1. Savya, 2. Apasavya, 3. Leha, 4. Grasana, 5. Nirodha, 6. Avamardana, 7. Āroha, 8. Āghrāta, 9. Madhyatama, 10. Tamontya.

savyApasavyalehagrasananirodhAvamardana'rohAH । AghrAtaM madhyatamastamo antya iti te daza grAsAH ॥ 5-43 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptसव्यगते तमसि जगज्जलप्लुतं भवति मुदितं अभयं च । अपसव्ये नरपतितस्करावमर्दैः प्रजानाशः ॥ ५-४४ ॥
If the eclipse should commence on the left side of the disc, it is technically known as Savyagata: the earth will then be flooded with water and there will be joy and freedom from fear. If it should commence on the right side of the disc, it: is technically known as Apasavyagata: mankind will suffer from their rulers and from robbers.

savyagate tamasi jagajjalaplutaM bhavati muditaM abhayaM ca । apasavye narapatitaskarAvamardaiH prajAnAzaH ॥ 5-44 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptजिह्वौपलेढि परितस्तिमिरनुदो मण्डलं यदि स लेहः । प्रमुदितसमस्तभूता प्रभूततोया च तत्र मही ॥ ५-४५ ॥
If the solar or lunar disc should be just dimmed by darkness all round which disappears immediately, the eclipse is technically known as Leha (licking): all creatures will be happy and the earth will be flooded with water.

jihvaupaleDhi paritastimiranudo maNDalaM yadi sa lehaH । pramuditasamastabhUtA prabhUtatoyA ca tatra mahI ॥ 5-45 ॥
