अमृतऽस्वादविशेषाच्च्छिन्नं अपि शिरः किलासुरस्यैदम् । प्राणैरपरित्यक्तं ग्रहतां यातं वदन्त्येके ॥ ५-०१ ॥
Some say that Rāhu, the asura, though his head was cut, dies not but lives in the shape of a planet having tasted of ambrosia.
english translation
amRta'svAdavizeSAccchinnaM api ziraH kilAsurasyaidam । prANairaparityaktaM grahatAM yAtaM vadantyeke ॥ 5-01 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptइन्दुअर्कमण्डलऽकृतिरसितत्वात्किल न दृश्यते गगने । अन्यत्र पर्वकालाद्वरप्रदानात्कमलयोनेः ॥ ५-०२ ॥
That he has a disc like the sun and moon and as that disc is black it is invisible when in the sky except on the occasion of eclipses in virtue of a boon from Brahmā.
english translation
induarkamaNDala'kRtirasitatvAtkila na dRzyate gagane । anyatra parvakAlAdvarapradAnAtkamalayoneH ॥ 5-02 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptमुखपुच्छविभक्ताङ्गं भुजङ्गं आकारं उपदिशन्त्यन्ये । कथयन्त्यमूर्तं अपरे तमोमयं सैंहिकेयऽख्याख्यम् ॥ ५-०३ ॥
Others say that he resembles a serpent in shape with his head severed from his tail; a few that he is bodiless, that he is mere darkness and that he is the son of Siṃhikā.
english translation
mukhapucchavibhaktAGgaM bhujaGgaM AkAraM upadizantyanye । kathayantyamUrtaM apare tamomayaM saiMhikeya'khyAkhyam ॥ 5-03 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptयदि मूर्तो भविचारी शिरो अथ वा भवति मण्डली राहुः । भगणार्धेन अन्तरितौ गृह्णाति कथं नियतचारः ॥ ५-०४ ॥
Now, if he has a body or be simply a head with a regular motion in the ecliptic, how comes it that he eclipses the sun and moon when they are 180° from him?
english translation
yadi mUrto bhavicArI ziro atha vA bhavati maNDalI rAhuH । bhagaNArdhena antaritau gRhNAti kathaM niyatacAraH ॥ 5-04 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptअनियतचारः खलु चेदुपलब्धिः संख्यया कथं तस्य । पुच्छऽननाभिधानो अन्तरेण कस्मान्न गृह्णाति ॥ ५-०५ ॥
If his motion be not subject to fixed laws, how comes it that his exact place is ascertained; how comes it that he never eclipses by the part of his body between his head and tail?
english translation
aniyatacAraH khalu cedupalabdhiH saMkhyayA kathaM tasya । puccha'nanAbhidhAno antareNa kasmAnna gRhNAti ॥ 5-05 ॥
