अथ तु भुजगेन्द्ररूपः पुच्छेन मुखेन वा स गृह्णाति । मुखपुच्छान्तरसंस्थं स्थगयति कस्मान्न भगणार्धम् ॥ ५-०६ ॥

sanskrit

If being of the shape of a serpent he eclipses with his head or with his tail, how comes it that he does not hide one half of the heavens lying between his head and tail?

english translation

atha tu bhujagendrarUpaH pucchena mukhena vA sa gRhNAti । mukhapucchAntarasaMsthaM sthagayati kasmAnna bhagaNArdham ॥ 5-06 ॥

राहुद्वयं यदि स्याद्ग्रस्ते अस्तमिते अथ वाउदिते चन्द्रे । तत्समगतिनाअन्येन ग्रस्तः सूर्यो अपि दृश्यते ॥ ५-०७ ॥

If, as some say, there be two Rāhus, when the moon is eclipsed by one of them at rising or setting how comes it we see the sun in the opposite point uneclipsed by the other Rāhu of equal motion?

english translation

rAhudvayaM yadi syAdgraste astamite atha vAudite candre । tatsamagatinAanyena grastaH sUryo api dRzyate ॥ 5-07 ॥

भूच्छायां स्वग्रहणे भास्करं अर्कग्रहे प्रविशतिइन्दुः । प्रग्रहणं अतः पश्चान्नैन्दोर्भानोश्च पूर्वार्धात् ॥ ५-०८ ॥

sanskrit

The truth is that in her own eclipse, the moon enters the shadow of the earth, and in that of the sun, the solar disc. Hence, the lunar eclipse does not commence at the western limb nor the solar at the eastern limb.

bhUcchAyAM svagrahaNe bhAskaraM arkagrahe pravizatiinduH । pragrahaNaM ataH pazcAnnaindorbhAnozca pUrvArdhAt ॥ 5-08 ॥

वृक्षस्य स्वच्छाया यथा एकपार्श्वे भवति दीर्घचया । निशि निशि तद्वद्भूमेरावरणवशाद्दिनेशस्य ॥ ५-०९ ॥

Just as the shadow of a tree neither continues in the same direction nor of the same length, so changes the shadow of the earth, night after night owing to the revolution of the sun.

vRkSasya svacchAyA yathA ekapArzve bhavati dIrghacayA । nizi nizi tadvadbhUmerAvaraNavazAddinezasya ॥ 5-09 ॥

सूर्यात्सप्तमराशौ यदि चौदग्दक्षिणेन नातिगतः । चन्द्रः पूर्वाभिमुखश्छायां और्वीं तदा विशति ॥ ५-१० ॥

When the moon, whose course is always from west to east, is due opposite to the sun swerving neither much to the north nor to the south, she enters the shadow of the earth.
