चन्द्रो अधःस्थः स्थगयति रविं अम्बुदवत्समागतः पश्चात् । प्रतिदेशं अतश्चित्रं दृष्टिवशाद्भास्करग्रहणम् ॥ ५-११ ॥

The moon, moving from the west, hides the solar disc from below just like a cloud; and the solar eclipse varies differently in different countries according to the different degrees of visibility of the eclipsed disc.

candro adhaHsthaH sthagayati raviM ambudavatsamAgataH pazcAt । pratidezaM atazcitraM dRSTivazAdbhAskaragrahaNam ॥ 5-11 ॥

आवरणं महदिन्दोः कुण्ठविषाणस्ततो अर्धसंच्छन्नः । स्वल्पं रवेर्यतो अतस्तीक्ष्णविषाणो रविर्भवति ॥ ५-१२ ॥

What eclipses the moon is bigger than the moon; what eclipses the sun is smaller than the sun. Hence in semi-lunar and semi-solar eclipses, the luminous horns are respectively blunt and sharp.

AvaraNaM mahadindoH kuNThaviSANastato ardhasaMcchannaH । svalpaM raveryato atastIkSNaviSANo ravirbhavati ॥ 5-12 ॥

एवं उपरागकारणं उक्तं इदं दिव्यदृग्भिराचार्यैः । राहुरकारणं अस्मिन्नित्युक्तः शास्त्रसद्भावः ॥ ५-१३ ॥

Thus, the cause of eclipses has been explained in this manner by the learned teachers, the divine seers. In this doctrine, Rāhu is said not to be the actual cause—this is the true intent of the authoritative treatises.

यो असौअसुरो राहुस्तस्य वरो ब्रह्मणा अयं आज्ञप्तः । आप्यायनं उपरागे दत्तहुतांशेन ते भविता ॥ ५-१४ ॥

That demon Rāhu—this boon was granted to him by Brahmā: ‘At the time of an eclipse, you shall be nourished by the oblations offered into the sacred fire.

yo asauasuro rAhustasya varo brahmaNA ayaM AjJaptaH । ApyAyanaM uparAge dattahutAMzena te bhavitA ॥ 5-14 ॥

तस्मिन्काले सान्निध्यं अस्य तेनौपचर्यते राहुः । याम्योत्तरा शशिगतिर्गणिते अप्युपचर्यते तेन ॥ ५-१५ ॥

At that time, Rāhu is said to be ‘present’ there only by figurative convention. In the same way, the Moon’s motion is described as southward or northward even in mathematical calculations.
