गौरासितक्षितिभवं सम्पूज्य यथाविधि द्विजः पूर्वम् । विजने समेत्य रात्रौ स्पृष्ट्वा ब्रूयादिमं मन्त्रम् ॥ ४३-१६ ॥

The brāhmaṇa first worshiped Gaurasita Kṣitibhava in accordance with the prescribed rituals. At night one should meet in a deserted place and touch the body and chant the following mantra.

english translation

gaurAsitakSitibhavaM sampUjya yathAvidhi dvijaH pUrvam । vijane sametya rAtrau spRSTvA brUyAdimaM mantram ॥ 43-16 ॥

यानीह वृक्षे भूतानि तेभ्यः स्वस्ति नमो अस्तु वः । उपहारं गृहीत्वाइमं क्रियतां वासपर्ययः ॥ ४३-१७ ॥

I offer my respectful obeisances unto all the creatures that are in this tree. Take this gift and spend your stay there.

english translation

yAnIha vRkSe bhUtAni tebhyaH svasti namo astu vaH । upahAraM gRhItvAimaM kriyatAM vAsaparyayaH ॥ 43-17 ॥

पार्थिवस्त्वां वरयते स्वस्ति ते अस्तु नगोत्तम । ध्वजार्थं देवराजस्य पूजाइयं प्रतिगृह्यताम् ॥ ४३-१८ ॥

The earth chooses you, and may you be well, O best of the mountains. Please accept this worship of the king of the gods for the sake of the flag.

pArthivastvAM varayate svasti te astu nagottama । dhvajArthaM devarAjasya pUjAiyaM pratigRhyatAm ॥ 43-18 ॥

छिन्द्यात्प्रभातसमये वृक्षं उदक्प्राङ्मुखो अपि वा भूत्वा । परशोर्जर्जरशब्दो नैष्टः स्निग्धो घनश्च हितः ॥ ४३-१९ ॥

At dawn, facing the east or north, the carpenter should cut the tree. A rough and creaking sound of the axe is not auspicious, but a soft and deep one is beneficial.

chindyAtprabhAtasamaye vRkSaM udakprAGmukho api vA bhUtvA । parazorjarjarazabdo naiSTaH snigdho ghanazca hitaH ॥ 43-19 ॥

नृपजयदं अविध्वंस्तं पतनं अनाकुञ्चितं च पूर्वोदक् । अविलग्नं चान्यतरौ विपरीतं अतस्त्यजेत्पतितम् ॥ ४३-२० ॥

If the tree falls down unbroken and unbent, and without being entangled in other trees, it will confer victory on the king. So will one that falls with its tip towards the east or north. If it falls down under contrary circumstances, it should be abandoned.

nRpajayadaM avidhvaMstaM patanaM anAkuJcitaM ca pUrvodak । avilagnaM cAnyatarau viparItaM atastyajetpatitam ॥ 43-20 ॥
