दिवि भुक्तशुभफलानां पततां रूपाणि यानि तान्युल्काः । धिष्ण्याउल्काअशनिविद्युत्तारा इति पञ्चधा भिन्नाः ॥ ३३-०१ ॥

Meteors (ulkā) are appearances of those who, having enjoyed in the higher worlds the effects of their puṇya karma (good deeds), fall down to the Earth. These meteors are of five sorts known technichally as—1. Dhiṣṇya, 2. Ulkā, 3. Aśani (thunderbolt), 4. Vidyut (lightning), 5. Tārā (stars).

उल्का पक्षेण फलं तद्वद्धिष्ण्याअशनिस्त्रिभिः पक्षैः । विद्युदहोभिः षड्भिः तद्वत्तारा विपाचयति ॥ ३३-०२ ॥

Dhiṣṇya produces its effects within a fortnight; Ulkā takes also the same period; Aśani produces its effects within a month and a half; Vidyut within 6 days and Tārā takes the same period.

तारा फलपादकरी फलार्धदात्री प्रकीर्तिता धिष्ण्या । तिस्रः सम्पूर्णफला विद्युदथौल्काअशनिश्चैति ॥ ३३-०३ ॥

Tārā produces only a fourth of the effects assigned to meteors in general. Dhiṣṇya one-half, and Vidyut, Ulkā and Aśani produce their full effects.

अशनिः स्वनेन महता नृगजाश्वमृगाश्मवेश्मतरुपशुषु । निपतति विदारयन्ती धरातलं चक्रसंस्थाना ॥ ३३-०४ ॥

Aśani is a meteoric substance, circular in shape; it strikes with a loud report men, elephants, horses, deer, rocks, houses, trees and sheep and passes into the Earth.

विद्युत्सत्त्वत्रासं जनयन्ती तटतटस्वना सहसा । कुतिलविशाला निपतति जीवैन्धनराशिषु ज्वलिता ॥ ३३-०५ ॥

Lightning that creates terror among living beings, producing a sudden and sharp 'tata-tata' (cracking/clattering) sound; Having a crooked and wide shape, it falls while blazing fiercely upon groups of living beings or stacks of fuel (or forest/vegetation).

Verses 6-10
