पृथक्त्वेन तु यज्ज्ञानं नानाभावान्पृथग्विधान् । वेत्ति सर्वेषु भूतेषु तज्ज्ञानं विद्धि राजसम् ॥ १८-२१॥

sanskrit

But know that knowledge to be originating from rajas which sees all beings, by reason of their individuality, as entities of distinct nature.

pRthaktvena tu yajjJAnaM nAnAbhAvAnpRthagvidhAn | vetti sarveSu bhUteSu tajjJAnaM viddhi rAjasam || 18-21||

hk transliteration

यत्तु कृत्स्नवदेकस्मिन्कार्ये सक्तमहैतुकम् । अतत्त्वार्थवदल्पं च तत्तामसमुदाहृतम् ॥ १८-२२॥

sanskrit

But that (knowledge) is said to be born of tamas which is confined to one form as though it were all, which is irrational, not concern with truth and trivial.

yattu kRtsnavadekasminkArye saktamahaitukam | atattvArthavadalpaM ca tattAmasamudAhRtam || 18-22||

hk transliteration

नियतं सङ्गरहितमरागद्वेषतः कृतम् । अफलप्रेप्सुना कर्म यत्तत्सात्त्विकमुच्यते ॥ १८-२३॥

sanskrit

An action which is ordained, which is free from attachment, and which is done without love or hatred by one who is not desirous of any reward that action is declared to be born of sattva.

niyataM saGgarahitamarAgadveSataH kRtam | aphalaprepsunA karma yattatsAttvikamucyate || 18-23||

hk transliteration

यत्तु कामेप्सुना कर्म साहङ्कारेण वा पुनः । क्रियते बहुलायासं तद्राजसमुदाहृतम् ॥ १८-२४॥

But that action which is done by one longing for the fulfillment of desires and gain with egoism, with much effort that is declared to be born of rajas

yattu kAmepsunA karma sAhaGkAreNa vA punaH | kriyate bahulAyAsaM tadrAjasamudAhRtam || 18-24||

hk transliteration

अनुबन्धं क्षयं हिंसामनपेक्ष्य च पौरुषम् । मोहादारभ्यते कर्म यत्तत्तामसमुच्यते ॥ १८-२५॥

sanskrit

That action is said to be born of tamas which is undertaken out of delusion, (and) without consideration of its consequence, loss, harm and ability.
