पापवृत्तितया वैराद्देवर्षियमचोदनात् । दशन्ति सर्पास्तेषूक्तं विषाधिक्यं यथोत्तरम् ॥ ९ ॥

because of sinful conduct (of the victim), out of enmity or hatred, and due to the instigation or ordinance of the Gods, Sages, and Yama (the God of Death). Among these reasons, the severity/quantity of poison increases progressively in successive order.

pApavRttitayA vairAddevarSiyamacodanAt । dazanti sarpAsteSUktaM viSAdhikyaM yathottaram ॥ 9 ॥
