जीवनं तर्पणं हृद्यं ह्लादि बुद्धिप्रबोधनम् । तन्वव्यक्तरसं मृष्टं शीतं लघ्वमृतोपमम् ॥ १ ॥
The water of Ganga falling from the sky is beneficial for life (provides life), satisfying, good for the heart, joyful, increases the intellect, thin (thin - without any impurity), of unexpressed rasa (no expression of any special rasa like sweet etc.), soft, cool, light and is beneficial like nectar.

आकाश से गिरा हुआ गंगा का जल जीवन ( जीवित रखने वाला), तर्पण ( तृप्तिकारक ), हृदय के लिए हितकर, आनन्ददायक, बुद्धि को बढ़ाने वाला, तनु ( पतला- गन्दगी रहित), अव्यक्त रस (मधुर आदि किसी रस-विशेष की जिसमें अभिव्यक्ति न हो ), मृष्ट, शीतल, हलका और अमृत के समान हितकर होता है।

hk transliteration by Sanscriptगङ्गाम्बु नभसो भ्रष्टं स्पृष्टं त्वर्केन्दुमारुतैः । हिताहितत्वे तद्भूयो देशकालावपेक्षते ॥ २ ॥
This water after falling from the sky can be beneficial or harmful due to the effect of place and time due to the touch of the sun, moon and wind. That is, it becomes good or bad according to the effect of place and time.
english translation
यह जल आकाश से गिरने के बाद सूर्य, चन्द्र तथा वायु के स्पर्श से देश एवं काल के प्रभाव से हितकर भी हो सकता है और अहितकर भी हो सकता है। अर्थात् जैसे देश-काल का उसमें प्रभाव पड़ेगा तदनुरूप भला या बुरा हो जाता है ।

hk transliteration by Sanscriptयेनाभिवृष्टममलं शाल्यन्नं राजते स्थितम् । अक्लिन्नमविवर्णं च तत्पेयं गाङ्गम् अन्यथा ॥ ३॥
The water in which the rice cooked in silver vessel remains pure during rain, it should not be moist i.e. it should not become slimy and its colour should not become impure, is the water of Ganga and it should be drunk.
english translation
जिस जल के बरसते समय घर के भीतर चाँदी के पात्र में परोसा हुआ शालिचावलों का भात निर्मल बना रहे, वह क्लेदयुक्त न हो अर्थात् पसीजने न लगे और उसका वर्ण विकारयुक्त न हो जाय, वह गंगा का जल होता है, इसे पीना चाहिए।

hk transliteration by Sanscriptसामुद्रं तन्न पातव्यं मासादाश्वयुजाद्विना । ऐन्द्रमम्बु सुपात्रस्थमविपन्नं सदा पिबेत् ॥ ४ ॥
The water which is opposite to the above mentioned Ganga water is called sea water. It is not fit for drinking. This water becomes fit for drinking in the month of Ashwin. Aindram Ambu (water falling from the clouds) which is kept in a clean vessel and which is not contaminated in any way should always be drunk.

उक्त गंगाजल के विपरीत जो जल होता है, उसे समुद्र का जल कहते हैं। वह पीने के योग्य नहीं होता है। यह जल आश्विन मास में पीने योग्य हो जाता है I ऐन्द्रम् अम्बु ( बादलों से बरसा हुआ जल ) जो साफ-सुथरे पात्र में रखा हो और जो किसी प्रकार से विकार युक्त न हुआ हो, उसे सदा पीना चाहिए।

hk transliteration by Sanscriptतदभावे च भूमिष्ठमान्तरिक्षानुकारि यत् । शुचिपृथ्वलितश्वेते देशेऽर्कपवनाहतम् ॥ ५ ॥
In its absence, one should drink water that is as clean as the water falling from the sky and is kept in a clean, pure and black or white place (vessel) on earth, which is exposed to the rays of the sun and fresh air; from this point of view, the water of ponds and lakes is fit for drinking.

इसके अभाव में उस प्रकार के जल को पीना चाहिए, जो आकाश से बरसे हुए जल की भाँति स्वच्छ हो तथा पृथिवी के स्वच्छ, पवित्र तथा काले अथवा सफेद स्थान (पात्र) में रखा गया हो, जिसमें सूर्य की किरणों एवं शुद्ध हवा का स्पर्श होता हो; इस दृष्टि से तालाब तथा झील के जल पीने के योग्य होते हैं ।
