Sutra-sthana, the opening section of Vagbhata’s Ashtanga Hrudaya (circa 7th century CE), lays the theoretical and ethical foundation of classical Ayurveda. Composed in mnemonic sutras, it distills earlier Caraka–Sushruta wisdom into concise aphorisms on body–mind constitution (prakriti), dosha–dhatu–agni dynamics, hygiene, daily and seasonal regimens, diagnosis, pharmaceutics and physician conduct. Key themes are balance, prevention, individualized care and practical therapeutics. Historically it unified diverse traditions into a portable handbook for students and clinicians. Today Sutra-sthana’s holistic, lifestyle-centered guidance and emphasis on personalized, preventive medicine resonate with modern integrative health, public-health strategies and sustainable wellness practices.
