दण्डवतो मित्रं मित्र भावे तिष्ठति, अमित्रो वा मित्र भावे ॥

daNDavato mitraM mitra bhAve tiSThati, amitro vA mitra bhAve ॥

दण्ड मित्रयोस् तु साधारणे कार्ये सारतः स्व युद्ध देश काल लाभाद् विशेषः ॥

when there is a work that can be equally accomplished either by the army or by an ally, then preference to the army or to the ally should depend on the advantages of securing the appropriate place and time for war and the expected profit.

daNDa mitrayos tu sAdhAraNe kArye sArataH sva yuddha deza kAla lAbhAd vizeSaH ॥

शीघ्र अभियाने त्व् अमित्र आटविक अनभ्यन्तर कोपे च न मित्रं विद्यते ॥

In times of sudden expedition and on occasions of troubles from an enemy, a wild tribe, or local rebels, no friend can be trusted.

व्यसन यौगपद्ये पर-वृद्धौ च मित्रम् अर्थ युक्तौ तिष्ठति ॥

When calamities happen together, or when an enemy has grown strong, a friend keeps up his friendship as long as money is forthcoming.
