यद् अङ्गम् अल्प सारम् आत्मनस् तद् बहुना उपचिनुयात् ॥
He should array his troops on that side on which the enemy is weak or from which danger is apprehended.
english translation
yad aGgam alpa sAram Atmanas tad bahunA upacinuyAt ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptयतः परस्य अपचयस् ततो अभ्याशे व्यूहेत, यतोत् वा भयं स्यात् ॥
He should array his troops near where the enemy is weak, or from where danger might arise.
english translation
yataH parasya apacayas tato abhyAze vyUheta, yatot vA bhayaM syAt ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptअभिसृतं परिसृतम् अतिसृतम् अपसृतम् उन्मथ्य अवधानं वलयो गो मूत्रिका मण्डलं प्रकीर्णिका व्यावृत्त पृष्ठम् अनुवंशम् अग्रतः पार्श्वाभ्यां पृष्ठतो भग्न रक्षा भग्न अनुपात इत्य् अश्व युद्धानि ॥
Running against; running round; running beyond; running back; disturbing the enemy's halt; gathering the troops; curving, circling, miscellaneous operations; removal of the rear; pursuit of the line from the front, flanks and rear; protection of the broken army; and falling upon the broken army--these are the forms of waging war with horses.

abhisRtaM parisRtam atisRtam apasRtam unmathya avadhAnaM valayo go mUtrikA maNDalaM prakIrNikA vyAvRtta pRSTham anuvaMzam agrataH pArzvAbhyAM pRSThato bhagna rakSA bhagna anupAta ity azva yuddhAni ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptप्रकीर्णिक आवर्जान्य् एतान्य् एव चतुर्णाम् अङ्गानां व्यस्त समस्तानां वा घातः, पक्ष कक्ष उरस्यानां च प्रभञ्जनम् अवस्कन्दः सौप्तिकं च इति हसित् युद्धानि ॥
The same varieties with the exception of (what is called) miscellaneous operations; the destruction of the four constituents of the army, either single or combined; the dispersion of the flanks, wings and front trampling down; and attacking the army when it is asleep--these are the varieties of waging war with elephants.
english translation
prakIrNika AvarjAny etAny eva caturNAm aGgAnAM vyasta samastAnAM vA ghAtaH, pakSa kakSa urasyAnAM ca prabhaJjanam avaskandaH sauptikaM ca iti hasit yuddhAni ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptउन्मथ्य अवधान वर्जान्य् एतान्य् एव स्व भूमाव् अभियान अपयान स्थित युद्धानि इति रथ युद्धानि ॥

unmathya avadhAna varjAny etAny eva sva bhUmAv abhiyAna apayAna sthita yuddhAni iti ratha yuddhAni ॥
