पञ्च धनुः शत अपकृष्टं दुर्गम् अवस्थाप्य युद्धम् उपेयात्, भूमि वशेन वा ॥

HAVING fortified a camp at the distance of five hundred bows he should begin to fight.

विभक्त मुख्याम् अचक्षुर् विषये मोक्षयित्वा सेनां सेना पति नायकौ व्यूहेयाताम् ॥

Having detached the flower of the army and kept it on a favourable position not visible (to the enemy), the commander-in-chief and the leader should array the rest of the army.

vibhakta mukhyAm acakSur viSaye mokSayitvA senAM senA pati nAyakau vyUheyAtAm ॥

शम अन्तरं पत्तिं स्थापयेत् त्रि शम अन्तरम् अश्वम्, पञ्च शम अन्तरं रथं हस्तिनं वा ॥

The infantry should be arrayed such that the space between any two men is a sama (14 angulas); cavalry with three samas; chariots with four samas; and elephants with twice or thrice as much space (as between any two chariots).

zama antaraM pattiM sthApayet tri zama antaram azvam, paJca zama antaraM rathaM hastinaM vA ॥

द्वि गुण अन्तरं त्रि गुण अन्तरं वा व्यूहेत ॥

One should arrange the battle formation with either double or triple the spacing.

एवं यथा सुखम् असम्बाधं युध्येत ॥

With such an array free to move and having no confusion, one should fight.
