These are classified into different groups based on their qualities: Madhura (Sweet) Category: Includes substances like milk, clarified butter, oil, various grains (e.g., barley, wheat, etc.), pulses, and certain herbs such as licorice, and sweet fruits like grapes and dates. This category generally has a nourishing and strengthening effect. Amla (Sour) Category: Includes substances like pomegranate, amalaki (Indian gooseberry), lime, mango, kapitta, and various sour fruits and herbs. These have a stimulating and digestive effect. Lavana (Salty) Category: Includes substances like rock salt, sea salt, various types of pickles, and salt-rich herbs. These have a purifying and digestive effect. Katuka (Bitter) Category: Includes substances like pippali (long pepper), certain bitter herbs, and bitter fruits. These have a digestive and detoxifying effect. Tikta (Bitter) Category: Includes substances like neem, turmeric, and bitter fruits and herbs. These have a cleansing and digestive effect. Kashaya (Astringent) Category: Includes substances like various astringent fruits, herbs, and roots. These have a drying and binding effect.

The six tastes that are consumed and absorbed lead to the enhancement of strength and control. Just as the aggravated doshas are brought under control by a strong influence, so too do these tastes enhance strength and dominion.
