"One should test the soil for the cultivation of medicinal herbs. The soil should be free from holes, ditches, gravel, stones, ant-hills, and should not be used for cremation or execution grounds. It should not be disfigured, and should have a smooth, firm, steady texture. The soil should be glossy, black, yellowish, or red in color and should be free from sand, potash, or alkaline substances. It should have good moisture from a nearby stream or reservoir. Even if the soil has good qualities, if it is infested with insects, poison, or affected by heat, wind, or other elements, it should be rejected. The soil should be firm, deeply rooted, and have a consistent composition to support the growth of medicinal herbs."
