sanskrit

Vata (air), Pitta (bile), and Kapha (phlegm) are the fundamental causes of the body's formation. These three, when balanced and unvitiated, support the body in its lower, middle, and upper regions, much like a house is supported by three pillars. Hence, some refer to the body as "Tristhuna" (supported by three pillars). When these same doshas become vitiated, they become the cause of destruction of the body. Even during the processes of formation, sustenance, and destruction, the body is never free from these three, along with the fourth—blood (Rakta).
