तस्याङ्गवरमाद्यं प्रत्यक्षागमानुमानोपमानैरविरुद्धमुच्यमानमुपधारय ||१६||

"Accept the primary component of it (the science) as described, which is supported by direct perception, tradition, inference, and analogy, and is not contradictory."

english translation

एतद्ध्यङ्गं प्रथमं, प्रागभिघातव्रणसंरोहाद्यज्ञशिरःसन्धानाच्च | श्रूयते हि यथा- “रुद्रेण यज्ञस्य शिरश्छिन्नमिति, ततो देवा अश्विनावभिगम्योचुः- भगवन्तौ नः श्रेष्ठतमौ युवां भविष्यथः, भवद्भ्यां यज्ञस्य शिरः सन्धातव्यमिति | तावूचतुरेवमस्त्विति | अथ तयोरर्थे देवा इन्द्रं यज्ञभागेन प्रासादयन् | ताभ्यां यज्ञस्य शिरः संहितम्” इति ||१७||

The primary position of this branch of the ayurveda, (as regards its time or origin), may be inferred from the fact that Surgery lends her aid materially towards the healing up of traumatic ulcers.[5] The second reason for such an inference may be deduced from the replacement of the severed head of Yajna. It is told that the god Rudra, severed the head of the God of Sacrifice (Yajna). Whereupon the gods approached the celestial Ashvins, and addressed them as follows:— “You twins, O lords, who are to be the greatest of us all, connect the head of Yajna with his decapitated trunk.” To them, replied the divine Ashvins:— “We shall do, O lords, as you command us to do.” Then the celestials propitiated the god Indra in order that a portion of the oblations offered in the course of a sacrifice, might be allotted to those heavenly twins. The Ashvins reunited the severed head of Yajna to his body as prayed for. [Hence this branch of the ayurveda (Shalyanga) is the oldest of all its subdivisions].

etaddhyaGgaM prathamaM, prAgabhighAtavraNasaMrohAdyajJaziraHsandhAnAcca | zrUyate hi yathA- “rudreNa yajJasya zirazchinnamiti, tato devA azvinAvabhigamyocuH- bhagavantau naH zreSThatamau yuvAM bhaviSyathaH, bhavadbhyAM yajJasya ziraH sandhAtavyamiti | tAvUcaturevamastviti | atha tayorarthe devA indraM yajJabhAgena prAsAdayan | tAbhyAM yajJasya ziraH saMhitam” iti ||17||

अष्टास्वपि चायुर्वेदतन्त्रेष्वेतदेवाधिकमभिमतम्, आशुक्रियाकरणाद्यन्त्रशस्त्रक्षाराग्निप्रणिधानात् सर्वतन्त्रसामान्याच्च ||१८||

All hold this Tantra to be the most important of all the other branches of the science, due to its instantaneous actions capable of such appliances as surgical operations, external applications of alkalis, cauterization, etc., and secondly because it contains all that can be found in the other branches of medicine as well, with the superior advantage of producing instantaneous effects by means of surgical instruments and appliances. Hence, it is the highest in value of all the medical Tantras.

aSTAsvapi cAyurvedatantreSvetadevAdhikamabhimatam, AzukriyAkaraNAdyantrazastrakSArAgnipraNidhAnAt sarvatantrasAmAnyAcca ||18||

hk transliteration

तदिदं शाश्वतं पुण्यं स्वर्ग्यं यशस्यमायुष्यं वृत्तिकरं चेति ||१९||

It is eternal and a source of infinite piety, imparts fame and opens the gates of Heaven to its votaries, prolongs the duration of human existence on earth, and helps men in successfully fulfilling their missions, and earning a decent competence, in life.

english translation

tadidaM zAzvataM puNyaM svargyaM yazasyamAyuSyaM vRttikaraM ceti ||19||

hk transliteration

ब्रह्मा प्रोवाच ततः प्रजापतिरधिजगे, तस्मादश्विनौ, अश्विभ्यामिन्द्रः, इन्द्रादहं, मया त्विह प्रदेयमर्थिभ्यः प्रजाहितहेतोः ||२०||

sanskrit

Brahma was the first to inculcate the principles of the holy Ayurveda. Prajapati learned the science from him. The Ashvins learned it from Prajapati and imparted the knowledge to Indra, who has favored me (Dhanvantari) with an entire knowledge thereof. I, for the good of mankind, am ready to impart it to those on earth.
