धन्वन्तरिं महाप्राज्ञं सर्वशास्त्रविशारदम् । पादयोरुपसङ्गृह्य सुश्रुतः परिपृच्छति ॥३॥
Sushruta, with reverence, asks Lord Dhanvantari, the great wise one, who is well-versed in all sciences, while holding his feet.

सुश्रुत, श्रद्धापूर्वक, महान बुद्धिमान भगवान धन्वंतरि, जो सभी विज्ञानों में पारंगत हैं, उनके चरण पकड़कर उनसे पूछते हैं।

सर्पसङ्ख्यां विभागं च दष्टलक्षणमेव च । ज्ञानं च विषवेगानां भगवन् ! वक्तुमर्हसि ॥४॥
O Lord, you are worthy to explain the classification of snakes, the signs of their bites, and the knowledge of the venomous effects.

हे भगवान, आप साँपों के वर्गीकरण, उनके काटने के लक्षण और विषैले प्रभाव के ज्ञान को समझाने के योग्य हैं।

तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा प्राब्रवीद्भिषजां वरः । असङ्ख्या वासुकिश्रेष्ठा विख्यातास्तक्षकादयः ॥५॥
Hearing these words, the best of physicians spoke: "There are countless snakes, the most eminent being Vasuki, and the renowned Takshaka and others."
