Sveda (calorification, fomentation, diaphoretic measures, etc.) may be divided into four groups such as, the application of direct heat (Tapa-sveda), fomentation (Ushma-sveda), poulticing (Upanaha sveda) and the application of heated fluids (Drava-sveda). All kinds of diaphoretic measures (Sveda) belong to one or the other of these groups.

Ushma-sveda is performed by anointing the affected area with a mixture of the substances that are hot, such as Kāpāla, Pāṣāṇa, Ēṣṭa, Kālohapinḍa, and Agni-varṇa, or with sour substances. One should apply it with a moist paste of flesh, oil, and curd, or with any sour liquid, and maintain warmth. One should take a heated pot that is filled with water, oil, or an infusion of herbs, or any similar liquid, and place it over the affected area. The head of the pot should be covered, and the opening directed downwards, forming a shape like an elephant's trunk, and through this opening, one should perform sweating treatment on the affected area.
