ऋतमुञ्छशिलं प्रोक्तममृतं यदयाचितम् । मृतं तु नित्ययाच्ञा स्यात्प्रमृतं कर्षणं स्मृतम् ।। ७-११-१९ ।।

sanskrit

The profession of uñchaśila, collecting grains from the field, is called ṛta. Collecting without begging is called amṛta, begging grains is called mṛta, tilling the ground is called pramṛta, and trade is called satyānṛta. Engaging in the service of low-grade persons, however, is called śva-vṛtti, the profession of the dogs. ।। 7-11-19 ।।

english translation

उञ्छशिल वृत्ति में अर्थात् खेती से अन्न एकत्र करने की वृत्ति को होता है। इसे ही ऋत कहते हैं। बिना भीख माँगे एकत्र करना अमृत कहलाता है, अन्न की भीख माँगना मृत है, जमीन को जोतना प्रमृत है और व्यापार करना सत्यानृत है। किन्तु निम्न पुरुषों की सेवा करना श्ववृत्ति या कूकर वृत्ति कहलाती है। ।। ७-११-१९ ।।
