अन्नं चराणामचरा ह्यपदः पादचारिणाम् । अहस्ता हस्तयुक्तानां द्विपदां च चतुष्पदः ।। ६-४-९ ।।

By nature’s arrangement, fruits and flowers are considered the food of insects and birds; grass and other legless living entities are meant to be the food of four-legged animals like cows and buffalo; animals that cannot use their front legs as hands are meant to be the food of animals like tigers, which have claws; and four-legged animals like deer and goats, as well as food grains, are meant to be the food of human beings. ।। 6-4-9 ।।

english translation

प्रकृति की व्यवस्था के द्वारा फलों तथा फूलों को कीड़ों तथा पक्षियों का भोजन माना जाता है; घास तथा अन्य बिना पैर वाले जीव गायों तथा भैसों जैसे चौपायों के भोजन के लिए हैं। वे पशु, जो अपने अगले पैरों को हाथों की तरह काम में नहीं ला सकते पंजों वाले बाघों जैसे पशुओं के भोजन हैं तथा हिरन एवं बकरे जैसे चौपाये जानवर तथा खाद्यान्न भी मनुष्यों के भोजन के निमित्त होते हैं। ।। ६-४-९ ।।
