लब्ध्वा निमित्तमव्यक्तं व्यक्ताव्यक्तं भवत्युत । यथायोनि यथाबीजं स्वभावेन बलीयसा ।। ६-१-५४ ।।

The fruitive activities a living being performs, whether pious or impious, are the unseen cause for the fulfillment of his desires. This unseen cause is the root for the living entity’s different bodies. Because of his intense desire, the living entity takes birth in a particular family and receives a body which is either like that of his mother or like that of his father. The gross and subtle bodies are created according to his desire. ।। 6-1-54 ।।

english translation

सजीव प्राणी जो भी सकाम कर्म करता है, वे चाहे पवित्र हों या अपवित्र, वे उसकी इच्छाओं की पूर्ति के अदृश्य कारण होते हैं। यह अदृश्य कारण ही जीव के विभिन्न शरीरों की जड़ है। जीव अपनी उत्कट इच्छा के कारण किसी विशेष परिवार में जन्म लेता है और ऐसा शरीर प्राप्त करता है, जो या तो उसकी या उसके पिता माता जैसा होता है। स्थूल तथा सूक्ष्म शरीर उसकी इच्छा के अनुसार उत्पन्न होते हैं। ।। ६-१-५४ ।।

labdhvA nimittamavyaktaM vyaktAvyaktaM bhavatyuta | yathAyoni yathAbIjaM svabhAvena balIyasA || 6-1-54 ||
