प्रसज्जति क्वापि लता भुजाश्रयस्तदाश्रयाव्यक्तपदद्विजस्पृहः । क्वचित्कदाचिद्धरिचक्रतस्त्रसन् सख्यं विधत्ते बककङ्कगृध्रैः ।। ५-१३-१६ ।।

Sometimes the living entity in the forest of material existence takes shelter of creepers and desires to hear the chirping of the birds in those creepers. Being afraid of roaring lions in the forest, he makes friends with cranes, herons and vultures. ।। 5-13-16 ।।

english translation

कभी-कभी जीवात्मा संसार रूपी जंगल में लताओं का आश्रय लेता है और उन लताओं में बैठें पक्षियों की चहचहाहट सुनना चाहता है। जंगल के सिंहों की दहाड़ से भयभीत होकर वह बगुलों, सारसों तथा गृद्धों से मैत्री स्थापित करता है। ।। ५-१३-१६ ।।

तैर्वञ्चितो हंसकुलं समाविशन्नरोचयन् शीलमुपैति वानरान् । तज्जातिरासेन सुनिर्वृतेन्द्रियः परस्परोद्वीक्षणविस्मृतावधिः ।। ५-१३-१७ ।।

Being cheated by them, the living entity in the forest of the material world tries to give up the association of these so-called yogīs, svāmīs and incarnations and come to the association of real devotees, but due to misfortune he cannot follow the instructions of the spiritual master or advanced devotees; therefore he gives up their company and again returns to the association of monkeys who are simply interested in sense gratification and women. He derives satisfaction by associating with sense gratifiers and enjoying sex and intoxication. In this way he spoils his life simply by indulging in sex and intoxication. Looking into the faces of other sense gratifiers, he becomes forgetful and thus approaches death. ।। 5-13-17 ।।

संसार रूपी जंगल में तथाकथित योगियों, स्वामियों तथा अवतारों से ठगा जाकर जीवात्मा उनकी संगति छोडक़र असली भक्तों की संगति में आने का प्रयत्न करता है, किन्तु दुर्भाग्यवश वह सद्गुरु या परम भक्त के उपदेशों का पालन नहीं कर पाता, अत: वह उनकी संगति छोडक़र पुन: बन्दरों की संगति में वापस आ जाता है जो मात्र इन्द्रिय-तृप्ति तथा स्त्रियों में रुचि रखते हैं। वह इन विषयीजनों की संगति में रहकर तथा काम और मद्यपान में लगा रहकर तुष्ट हो लेता है। इस तरह वह काम और मद्यसेवन से अपना जीवन नष्ट कर देता है। वह अन्य विषयीजनों के मुखों को देख-देख कर भूला रहता है और मृत्यु निकट आ जाती है। ।। ५-१३-१७ ।।

द्रुमेषु रंस्यन् सुतदारवत्सलो व्यवायदीनो विवशः स्वबन्धने । क्वचित्प्रमादाद्गिरिकन्दरे पतन् वल्लीं गृहीत्वा गजभीत आस्थितः ।। ५-१३-१८ ।।

When the living entity becomes exactly like a monkey jumping from one branch to another, he remains in the tree of household life without any profit but sex. Thus he is kicked by his wife just like the he-ass. Unable to gain release, he remains helplessly in that position. Sometimes he falls victim to an incurable disease, which is like falling into a mountain cave. He becomes afraid of death, which is like the elephant in the back of that cave, and he remains stranded, grasping at the twigs and branches of a creeper. ।। 5-13-18 ।।

english translation

जब जीवात्मा एक शाखा से दूसरी शाखा पर कूदने वाले बन्दर के सदृश बन जाता है, तो गृहस्थ जीवन के वृक्ष में मात्र विषय सुख (संभोग) के लिए रहता है। इस प्रकार वह अपनी पत्नी से वैसे ही पाद-प्रहार पाता है जैसे कि गधा गधी से। मुक्ति का साधन न पाने के कारण वह असहाय बनकर उसी अवस्था में रहता है। कभी-कभी उसे असाध्य रोग हो जाता है जो पर्वत की गुफा में गिरने जैसा है। वह इस गुफा के पीछे रहने वाले मृत्यु रूपी हाथी से भयभीत हो उठता है और लताओं की टहनियाँ पकड़े रहकर लटका रहता है। ।। ५-१३-१८ ।।

अतः कथञ्चित्स विमुक्त आपदः पुनश्च सार्थं प्रविशत्यरिन्दम । अध्वन्यमुष्मिन्नजया निवेशितो भ्रमञ्जनोऽद्यापि न वेद कश्चन ।। ५-१३-१९ ।।

O killer of enemies, Mahārāja Rahūgaṇa, if the conditioned soul somehow or other gets out of his dangerous position, he again returns to his home to enjoy sex life, for that is the way of attachment. Thus, under the spell of the Lord’s material energy, he continues to loiter in the forest of material existence. He does not discover his real interest even at the point of death. ।। 5-13-19 ।।

english translation

हे शत्रुओं के संहारक, महाराज रहूगण, यदि बद्धजीव किसी प्रकार से इस भयानक स्थिति से उबर आता है, तो वह पुन: विषयी जीवन बिताने के लिए अपने घर को लौट जाता है, क्योंकि वही आसक्ति का मार्ग है। इस प्रकार ईश्वर की माया से वशीभूत वह संसार रूपी जंगल में घूमता रहता है। मृत्यु के निकट पहुँच कर भी उसे अपने वास्तविक हित का पता नहीं चल पाता। ।। ५-१३-१९ ।।

रहूगण त्वमपि ह्यध्वनोऽस्य सन्न्यस्तदण्डः कृतभूतमैत्रः । असज्जितात्मा हरिसेवया शितं ज्ञानासिमादाय तरातिपारम् ।। ५-१३-२० ।।

My dear King Rahūgaṇa, you are also a victim of the external energy, being situated on the path of attraction to material pleasure. So that you may become an equal friend to all living entities, I now advise you to give up your kingly position and the rod by which you punish criminals. Give up attraction to the sense objects and take up the sword of knowledge sharpened by devotional service. Then you will be able to cut the hard knot of illusory energy and cross to the other side of the ocean of nescience. ।। 5-13-20 ।।

english translation

हे राजा रहूगण, तुम भी भौतिक सुख के प्रति आकर्षण-मार्ग में स्थित होकर माया के शिकार हो। मैं तुम्हें राज पद तथा उस दण्ड का जिससे अपराधियों को दण्डित करते हो परित्याग करने की सलाह देता हूँ जिससे तुम समस्त जीवात्माओं के सुहृद (मित्र) बन सको। विषयभोगों को त्याग कर अपने हाथ में भक्ति के द्वारा धार लगायी गयी ज्ञान की तलवार को धारण करो। तब तुम माया की कठिन ग्रंथि को काट सकोगे और अज्ञानता के सागर को पार करके दूसरे छोर पर जा सकोगे। ।। ५-१३-२० ।।
