पुरुषस्वभावविहितान् यथावर्णं यथाश्रमम् । वैराग्यरागोपाधिभ्यामाम्नातोभयलक्षणान् ।। १-९-२६ ।।

sanskrit

At Mahārāja Yudhiṣṭhira’s inquiry, Bhīṣmadeva first defined all the classifications of castes and orders of life in terms of the individual’s qualifications. Then he systematically, in twofold divisions, described counteraction by detachment and interaction by attachment. ।। 1-9-26 ।।

english translation

महाराज युधिष्ठिर के पूछे जाने पर भीष्मदेव ने सर्वप्रथम व्यक्ति की योग्यताओं के अनुसार जातियों के वर्गीकरण (वर्ण) तथा जीवन के आश्रमों का वर्णन किया। फिर उन्होंने क्रमबद्ध रूप से निवृत्ति तथा प्रवृत्ति नामक दो उपखण्डों का वर्णन किया। ।। १-९-२६ ।।

He then explained, by divisions, acts of charity, the pragmatic activities of a king and activities for salvation. Then he described the duties of women and devotees, both briefly and extensively. ।। 1-9-27 ।।

तब उन्होंने दान-कर्मों, राजा के राज्य-विषयक कार्यकलापों तथा मोक्ष-कर्मों की खणड-वार व्याख्या की। फिर उन्होंने स्त्रियों तथा भक्तों के कर्तव्यों का संक्षेप में विशद रूप से वर्णन किया। ।। १-९-२७ ।।

तत्पश्चात्, उन्होंने इतिहास से उद्धरण देते हुए, विभिन्न आश्रमों तथा जीवन की अवस्थाओं के वृत्तिपरक कार्यों का वर्णन किया, क्योंकि वे उस सत्य से भलीभाँति परिचित थे। ।। १-९-२८ ।।

जब भीष्मदेव वृत्तिपरक कर्तव्यों का वर्णन कर रहे थे, तभी सूर्य उत्तरी गोलार्द्ध की ओर चला गया। इच्छानुसार मरनेवाले योगी इसी अवधि की कामना करते हैं। ।। १-९-२९ ।।

तदोपसंहृत्य गिरः सहस्रणीर्विमुक्तसङ्गं मन आदिपूरुषे । कृष्णे लसत्पीतपटे चतुर्भुजेपुरः स्थितेऽमीलितदृग्व्यधारयत् ।। १-९-३० ।।

Thereupon that man who spoke on different subjects with thousands of meanings, and who fought on thousands of battlefields and protected thousands of men, stopped speaking and, being completely freed from all bondage, withdrew his mind from everything else and fixed his wide-open eyes upon the original Personality of Godhead, Śrī Kṛṣṇa, who stood before him, four-handed, dressed in yellow garments that glittered and shined. ।। 1-9-30 ।।

english translation

तत्पश्चात् वह व्यक्ति, जो हजारों अर्थों से युक्त विभिन्न विषयों पर बोलता था तथा हजारों युद्धों में लड़ चुका था और हजारों व्यक्तियों की रक्षा कर चुका था, उसने बोलना बन्द कर दिया। उसने समस्त बन्धन से पूर्ण रूप से मुक्त होकर, अन्य सभी वस्तुओं से अपना मन हटाकर, अपने खुले नेत्रों को उन आदि भगवान् श्रीकृष्ण पर टिका दिया, जो उनके समक्ष खड़े थे, जो चार भुजाओं वाले थे और जगमग करते एवं चमचमाते हुए पीत वस्त्र धारण किये थे। ।। १-९-३० ।।
