ततः सप्तदशे जातः सत्यवत्यां पराशरात् । चक्रे वेदतरोः शाखा दृष्ट्वा पुंसोऽल्पमेधसः ॥ १-३-२१ ॥
Thereafter, in the seventeenth incarnation of Godhead, Śrī Vyāsadeva appeared in the womb of Satyavatī through Parāśara Muni, and he divided the one Veda into several branches and subbranches, seeing that the people in general were less intelligent. ॥ 1-3-21 ॥

तत्पश्चात् सत्रहवें अवतार में भगवान्, पराशर मुनि के माध्यम से सत्यवती के गर्भ से श्री व्यासदेव के रूप में प्रकट हुए। उन्होंने यह देखकर कि जन-सामान्य अल्पज्ञ हैं, एकमेव वेद को अनेक शाखाओं-प्रशाखाओं में विभक्त कर दिया। ॥ १-३-२१ ॥
