पुनश्च भूयाद्भगवत्यनन्ते रतिः प्रसङ्गश्च तदाश्रयेषु । महत्सु यां यामुपयामि सृष्टिं मैत्र्यस्तु सर्वत्र नमो द्विजेभ्यः ॥ १-१९-१६ ॥
Again, offering obeisances unto all you brāhmaṇas, I pray that if I should again take my birth in the material world I will have complete attachment to the unlimited Lord Kṛṣṇa, association with His devotees and friendly relations with all living beings. ॥ 1-19-16 ॥

मैं आप समस्त ब्राह्मणों को पुन: नमस्कार करके यही प्रार्थना करता हूँ कि यदि मैं इस भौतिक जगत में फिर से जन्म लूँ, तो अनन्त भगवान् कृष्ण के प्रति मेरी पूर्ण आसक्ति हो, उनके भक्तों की संगति प्राप्त हो और समस्त जीवों के साथ मैत्री-भाव रहे। ॥ १-१९-१६ ॥

इति स्म राजाध्यवसाययुक्तः प्राचीनमूलेषु कुशेषु धीरः । उदङ्मुखो दक्षिणकूल आस्ते समुद्रपत्न्याः स्वसुतन्यस्तभारः ॥ १-१९-१७ ॥
In perfect self-control, Mahārāja Parīkṣit sat down on a seat of straw, with straw-roots facing the east, placed on the southern bank of the Ganges, and he himself faced the north. Just previously he had given charge of his kingdom over to his son. ॥ 1-19-17 ॥

पूर्ण आत्म-संयम से, महाराज परीक्षित पूर्वाभिमुख जड़ोंवाले कुशों के बने हुए, गंगा के दक्षिणी तट पर रखे, आसन पर बैठ गये और उन्होंने अपना मुख उत्तर की ओर कर लिया। इसके पूर्व उन्होंने अपने साम्राज्य का सारा भार अपने पुत्र को सौंप दिया था। ॥ १-१९-१७ ॥

एवं च तस्मिन् नरदेवदेवे प्रायोपविष्टे दिवि देवसङ्घाः । प्रशस्य भूमौ व्यकिरन् प्रसूनैर्मुदा मुहुर्दुन्दुभयश्च नेदुः ॥ १-१९-१८ ॥
Thus the King, Mahārāja Parīkṣit, sat to fast until death. All the demigods of the higher planets praised the King’s actions and in pleasure continually scattered flowers over the earth and beat celestial drums. ॥ 1-19-18 ॥

इस प्रकार महाराज परीक्षित आमरण उपवास करने के लिए बैठ गये। स्वर्गलोक के सारे देवता राजा के इस कार्य की प्रशंसा करने लगे और हर्ष-विभोर होकर पृथ्वी पर निरन्तर पुष्प वर्षा करने लगे तथा दैवी नगाड़े बजाने लगे। ॥ १-१९-१८ ॥

महर्षयो वै समुपागता ये प्रशस्य साध्वित्यनुमोदमानाः । ऊचुः प्रजानुग्रहशीलसारा यदुत्तमश्लोकगुणाभिरूपम् ॥ १-१९-१९ ॥
All the great sages who were assembled there also praised the decision of Mahārāja Parīkṣit, and they expressed their approval by saying “Very good.” Naturally the sages are inclined to do good to common men, for they have all the qualitative powers of the Supreme Lord. Therefore they were very much pleased to see Mahārāja Parīkṣit, a devotee of the Lord, and they spoke as follows. ॥ 1-19-19 ॥

वहाँ पर एकत्र हुए सारे ऋषियों ने भी महाराज परीक्षित के निर्णय को सराहा और “बहुत अच्छा (साधु-साधु)” कहकर उन्होंने अपना अनुमोदन व्यक्त किया। स्वभावत: मुनिगण सामान्य लोगों का कल्याण करने के लिए उन्मुख रहते हैं, क्योंकि उनमें परमेश्वर के सारे गुण पाये जाते हैं। अतएव वे भगवान् के भक्त महाराज परीक्षित को देखकर अत्यन्त प्रसन्न हुए और इस प्रकार बोले। ॥ १-१९-१९ ॥

न वा इदं राजर्षिवर्य चित्रं भवत्सु कृष्णं समनुव्रतेषु । येऽध्यासनं राजकिरीटजुष्टं सद्यो जहुर्भगवत्पार्श्वकामाः ॥ १-१९-२० ॥
[The sages said:] O chief of all the saintly kings of the Pāṇḍu dynasty who are strictly in the line of Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa! It is not at all astonishing that you give up your throne, which is decorated with the helmets of many kings, to achieve eternal association with the Personality of Godhead. ॥ 1-19-20 ॥

(मुनियों ने कहा :) हे भगवान् श्रीकृष्ण की परम्परा का पालन करनेवाले पाण्डुवंशी राजर्षियों के प्रमुख! यह तनिक भी आश्चर्यप्रद नहीं कि आप अपना वह सिंहासन, जो अनेक राजाओं के मुकुटों से सुसज्जित है, भगवान् का नित्य सान्निध्य प्राप्त करने के लिए त्याग रहे हैं। ॥ १-१९-२० ॥
